Libya Makes Arrests After Benghazi Attack

Source: WSJ

BENGHAZI—Four people have been arrested in connection with the attack against the American consulate here that resulted in the death of the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans, a Libyan official involved with the manhunt for the militants said.

Libyan security sources have a larger group of people under surveillance, the official said,

The Libyans have organized a multiagency task force, combining all available resources to hunt down the suspected Islamic militants, including intelligence, defense and interior officials, said the official. He declined to say how many suspects that the Libyans were watching, citing sensitivities of the continuing investigation.

"There is a group now that is under our custody, but there is a group we're following to know who's connected to them, and they are monitoring their phone calls," the official said.

There is no discernible ramp up of security across the streets of Benghazi in the aftermath of the attacks on the Americans that elevated tensions across the Middle East and raised concerns about how well the U.S. can protect its diplomats around the world.

They were shot on sight. His security guards (local Government Miltia) shot a man on the street when Dad asked, "Why?" answer was "No eyebrows". Wonder if they are a little more discreet with eyebrow shaving now?

Locals know the usual suspects as quickly as they responded you can bet the locals were pissed off.

He has enough sense to see how the Libyan government would respond to the attacks.

...we would have already launched an attack on Algeria.

As you say, we should be grateful for having Obama as President.

Let's see - America is attacked and bush can't get the perpetrator in SEVEN years! It took Obama to track down and get rid of Osama bin Laden.

On the other hand, America is attacked on Tuesday and already some of the perpetrators are arrested just two days later.

And WHICH party is better at tracking down our enemies?

The question is will people lay information, and in the circumstances they probably will.

And there are strong traditions of hospitality and of tribal obligation in the culture that militate against the perpetrators of this act.

NPR's Dina Temple-Raston says Libyan officials have informed the U.S. that four people are in custody in connection with the attack on the American consulate in Benghazi that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other embassy staffers on Tuesday.

But U.S. officials have yet to interview the detainees, described as "militants" or to verify their involvement in the attack. She says it is also unclear whether those arrested are Libyans or foreigners ...

10. Attack on U.S. Embassy in Libya was organized, official said

Sep 2012

BENGHAZI, Libya — The attack that killed four Americans in Libya, including the U.S. ambassador, was an organized two-part operation by heavily armed militants that included a precisely timed raid on a supposedly secret safe house just as Libyan and U.S. security forces were arriving to rescue evacuated consulate staff, a senior Libyan security official said on Thursday.

Wanis el-Sharef, eastern Libya's deputy interior minister, said the attacks Tuesday night were suspected to have been timed to mark the 9/11 anniversary and that the militants used civilians protesting an anti-Islam film as cover for their action. Infiltrators within the security forces may have tipped off militants to the safe house location, he said.

He said an unspecified number of militants suspected of taking part in the attack have been arrested and that others were being closely monitored by police to see whether they are linked to a group. He refused to elaborate ...

12. AND --- al Qaeda central NOT behind Benghazi attack

Source: al Qaeda central not behind Benghazi attack

The United States intelligence community does not believe the core of al Qaeda was behind this week's attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, a U.S. intelligence official told CNN Thursday.

The official said the picture is becoming clearer within the intelligence community as to what group or groups were responsible for the attack. Given what officials know about al Qaeda in Libya, U.S. intelligence believes it is very unlikely that core al Qaeda was behind the attack. But the official said the intelligence does not rule out that the attack was perpetrated by al Qaeda sympathizers.

There are some things that should not be reported and telling potential suspects that their calls are being monitored in one of them.
