Jimmy Carter becomes oldest living former president
Source: Advance Media/NJ.com
ATLANTA When Jimmy Carter left office in 1980, the return home to Plains, Ga., was not easy. His once-flourishing farming business was more than $1 million in debt, and he faced the prospect of selling the land his family had been on for 150 years.
Then a friend pointed out that Carter, at the tender age of 56, could expect to live at least until 80 years old.
I had one disturbing reaction, Carter wrote in his 1998 book, The Virtues of Aging. What was I going to do with the next 25 years?
Lets just say a lot from establishing the Carter Center and being awarded the Nobel Prize to building Habitat for Humanity homes and writing more than two dozen books.
March 21, 2019, marks yet another milestone. While it is not his birthday, Carter becomes the oldest living former president in U.S. history.

I doubt that the current morbidly obese, bucket-o-chicken-devouring occupant of the office has many years left in him. At least, I hope not.

(5,914 posts)For my money, he is the greatest President of my lifetime. His legacy was tarnished by Republican ratfuckers, who leveraged the Iranian hostage crisis to ensure that Ronald Fucking Reagan was elected, starting the slow boat to China that this country has been on ever since.
DirtEdonE
(1,220 posts)They intentionally sabotaged the economy too. They couldn't stand to have a Democratic president succeed after the nixon/ford total fuckup. So they sabotaged President Carter as they would have done to any Democratic president.
After Watergate there was a real feeling in this country that the repubican party would never recover its former control.
Now we have trump.

(5,914 posts)Based on the price of oil, due to the situation in... Iran. The Iran hostage situation was always used as an excuse that the Democrats would crater the country.
Those of us who were around back then heard about this every night, for years and years.. The ABC TV Show Nightline was even created to show how Jimmy Carter sucked so badly. Every night, we heard Ted Koppel on ABC say, "It has been XXX days since the American hostages have been taken captive." Every single night, we heard this. Magically, the hostages were released when Reagan was inaugurated.

Early in their marriage, they lived in subsidized housing, so he built much of their furniture, which they still use today. Woodworking has always been one of his favorite hobbies, something he began learning back when he was in school. And his final school project was - a scale model of The White House!
DirtEdonE
(1,220 posts)And that thing we have in the White House today. No wonder the nation is so divided.
Jimmy Carter is the kind of person that gives you hope for the human race.
trump is the kind of person who could make you hate the entire human race.

(205,161 posts)I always liked him - back in the day before I followed politics, when I was just starting to vote, I just liked him right from the start. And the more I learned, the more I came to admire him. And I know much more now since I have his autobiography - "A Full Life: Reflections at 90" - and I recommend it highly. He really has led a fascinating life, from his early life in rural Georgia to his Navy career - I have it on audio and often listen to it in my car and I don't think he even got to his run for president until disc #5, LOL.
Since he's 94 now, he doesn't get to Trump in that particular writing, but he has always spoken out - and I agree, the contrast between him and Trump is incredible. The mission of Carter's life has been to promote human rights - while Trump feels that some people - of his choosing - deserve none. It's unbelievable to me that the country which elected Jimmy Carter continues to put up with Trump.
