Macron: UK heading for no-deal Brexit if MPs reject May's plan
Source: The Guardian
Emmanuel Macron has warned that Britain is heading for a no-deal Brexit unless the House of Commons ratifies the withdrawal agreement negotiated with Brussels.
The stark choice for MPs was laid out by the French president shortly before the 27 EU heads of state and government listen to an appeal by Theresa May for a three-month Brexit delay.
In case of a no vote or a no, directly it will guide everyone to a no deal, for sure, Macron said. This is it. We are ready.

EU won't support an extension without approval of the old deal.
UK won't be able to vote again on the old deal.
Hard Brexit it is.

(1,896 posts)Brexit appears to be a mistake the country is set on making, and the fastest road to re-admission to the EU--without the special carve-outs--is through the ugliest Brexit.
And it would be nice to have an actual Schengen passport, eventually. I don't really care whether or not it's blue.

(94,483 posts)Switzerland is Schengen but not EU. Britain is EU but not Schengen.

(1,896 posts)But my other passport is Irish. Frankly, I'm assuming that the Common Travel Area is a carve-out which likely won't survive re-admission to the EU, at which point Ireland in particular could very easily go Schengen. Then again, they might just decide that the GFA is maintained by the CTA and leave it in place. My crystal ball is a little murky that far out.

You're right though, and as James O'Brien says, there will never be a better deal with the EU, than they already have. If they have to reapply, all those opt outs will be gone including the Euro.

(1,896 posts)Without engaging in Repu...ah, let's say "Fenian", talk, if a certain part of the island held a particular referendum and somewhere a border were to disappear entirely, why would Ireland not go Schengen?

(19,949 posts)same. Economically, the North would be a millstone (iirc the British Government pump in £5bn a year), but beyond that, you have two bitter and scarred communities up there who have not yet come to terms with the 30 years of conflict. If it were to happen, we'd be taking on a bag of problems.....and then there are the Loyalist/New IRA loopers.
Most of our interaction is still between the two islands, so I expect they would look to continue that, even in a No Deal situation. IIRC, there has already been agreement on that between the two governments.

(1,896 posts)Not that the rest of the island is still the same Celtic Tiger, but the North is just... If reunification does happen, they need to consult heavily with the Germans on lessons learned integrating a wasteland into a functioning economy. And it's friendlier than it was, but desperation and the end of an era has a way of making people antisocial. I'm hoping that Brexit leads to some Irish passports up there and maybe a little shared identity, but optimism has little place in Northern Ireland.
At the end of the day, I've got a foot on both sides of that channel, and about the only thing I'm really sure of is that I hate the DUP.

(10,749 posts)I think I read that the same shady groups involved in perverting the 2016 election were involved in the Brexit campaign.
Tinfoil hat:
- How many of the Brexit leaders had/have Russian connections and/or connections to the extreme right billionaires in the US?
- To what degree are those pushing for a hard Brexit - or at least not supporting less harsh options - have Russian/extreme RW connections?
- All of this - the 2016 election and Brexit - benefits only Putin and his allies as well as extreme RW people and organzations in the US, England, and Europe. And the Murdochs. For these people, including trump and RWers in the US, don't have (or even need) an allegiance to a particular country. As long as they benefit financially, citizenship and loyalty are meaningless.
- IOW, this is all connected.
I gotta take a break.
