A Taylorsville justice court judge who has been on the bench for more than two decades will be suspended for six months without pay for making politically charged comments about President Donald Trump from the bench and on social media.
In a decision released late Thursday, Utahs high court ruled that Judge Michael Kwan violated their code of conduct on several occasions.
In January 2017, Kwan had an exchange that appeared to demean a defendant, according to the opinion, and included political commentary related to Trumps immigration and tax policies.
The conversation in question revolved around whether a defendant had been paying their fines. The person said they had planned to use their tax return to pay what they owed.

We need to be diligent in questioning Congressional Republicans if they are going to be the American Reichstag and refuse to stand up for the Constitution, refuse to uphold their oath of office and enable the tyrants to consolidate their power."
The ruling suspending Kwan also cited an interaction in court with a defendant in January 2017 in which Kwan criticized Trump after the defendant said he would use his tax return to pay fines.
"You do realize that we have a new president, and you think we are getting any money back?" Kwan said.

While what he said is correct it calls his ability to be impartial into question.
