US abortion policy is 'extremist hate' and 'torture', says UN commissioner

Trump administration’s ban on terminations is a crisis directed at women, warns Kate Gilmore

The US policy on abortion is a form of extremist hate that amounts to the torture of women, the UN deputy high commissioner for human rights told the Guardian.

The attack on women’s rights was a “crisis”, organised and well-resourced by very extremist groups.

“We have not called it out in the same way we have other forms of extremist hate, but this is gender-based violence against women, no question,” Kate Gilmore said.

“It’s clear it’s torture – it’s a deprivation of a right to health,” she warned, pointing out that the committee of experts assigned to monitor the implementation of the nine core UN human rights instruments have each “independently declared the absolute prohibition of abortion … is against human rights”.

We really need to repackage the whole thinking process on women's rights to make their own autonomous choices without the interference of little insecure men who run Big Govt and the Big Church Biz.

The minority of misogynistic, piously patriarchal extremists cannot be allowed to pigeonhole millions of women. Their efforts to control and subjugate women is a malignate cancer that spreads far beyond the single issue of freedom of choice for all women to make a decision about what's in their own best interests.

According to a report by Women on Waves, approximately 25% of the world's population lives in countries with "highly restrictive abortion laws" - that is, laws which either completely ban abortion, or allow it only to save the mother's life. This category of countries includes most countries in Latin America, most countries of MENA, approximately half of the countries of Africa, seven countries in the Asia-Pacific region, as well as one country (Malta) and the Northern Ireland region of the UK in Europe.
