GOP lawmakers warn White House they'll try to block Trump's Mexico tariffs
Source: Washington Post
Republican senators warned Trump administration officials Tuesday they were prepared to block the presidents effort to impose tariffs on Mexican imports, promising what would be GOP lawmakers most brazen defiance of the president since he took office.
During a closed-door lunch, at least a half-dozen senators spoke in opposition to the tariffs, while no one spoke in support, according to multiple people present who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the private meeting. Senators told officials from the White House and Department of Justice that there could be a disapproval vote if Trump moves forward and this time, unlike with an earlier disapproval resolution, opponents of Trumps tariffs could have enough support to override a veto.
I think the administration ought to be concerned about another vote of disapproval on another national emergency act, this time trying to implement tariffs. Tariffs are not real popular in the Republican conference, said Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), summarizing what he said hed told the administration officials. This is a different vote. There is not much support in my conference for tariffs, thats for sure, said Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.). He said senators hope negotiations with Mexico will be fruitful and the tariffs wont happen.
The lunch meeting occurred just hours after Trump, during a news conference in London, reiterated his intention to impose the tariffs next week and said it would be foolish for Republican senators to try to stop him. The 5 percent tariffs on all Mexican goods, rising to 25 percent over time, are aimed at trying to force Mexico to take action to stop the tide of Central American migrants seeking entry into the United states.

(19,192 posts)is already talking that back, so don't count on it. I don't know why they're so afraid of that orange jackass. i guess they think he can get them re-elected? I wouldn't count on that either. People are mad and getting madder. The Trump ship is going to sink by election day. Bet on it.

(128,815 posts)sent a nasty-gram to the Congressional leadership (Pelosi & Turtle) & financial Committe Chairs (Neal & Assley) today demanding they do something about the tariff threat. I don't want to link to it here since they are obviously a RW org and I've been trying to find something other than them making a mention of it (outside of WaPo's mention) but you can Google it.
The OP article made the brief mention of this here that prompted me to look for it -
Given the potential damage to our economy and our national interests, we believe it is time for Congress to reclaim its constitutionally mandated authority to impose tariffs, and to prevent further unilateral tariff increases by the president, the letter says.
In their world, money talks!

(128,815 posts)That's why I busted out the popcorn in the OP.
And I just searched for Mr. Anti-tax man Grover Norquist's take and saw that he will be on CSPAN's Washington Journal this morning - (Grover Norquist Discusses Trump Administration Trade &Tariff Policies). I know that HE is not pleased! But he got his "Fearless Leader" anyway and not just someone with "working digits to sign this stuff".

(11,631 posts)... they just want to get re-elected themselves. Their base is so poisoned through and through with this Trump cancer thanks in large part to fox news and talk radio poisoning peoples minds that for a republican to split with him is political suicide. A few like Collins and Gardner are in places where Trump could drag them down, but you have to remember that most of these Republican senators are in red states where their only real political threat would be to be primaried from the right because they weren't dumbfuck Trumpy enough for the ignorant hateful MAGA base.
