TEHRAN, Iran Iran said on Monday it would breach internationally agreed curbs on its stock of low-enriched uranium in 10 days, a move likely to strain already high tensions with Washington, but it added European nations still had time to save a landmark nuclear deal.
"We have quadrupled the rate of enrichment and even increased it more recently, so that in 10 days it will bypass the 300 kg (661 pounds) limit," Iran's Atomic Energy Organization spokesman Behrouz Kamalvandi said on state TV.
The announcement indicated Iran's determination to break from the landmark 2015 accord, which has steadily unraveled since the Trump administration pulled America out of the deal last year and re-imposed tough economic sanctions on Iran, sending its economy into free-fall.
Kamalvandi, made the announcement during a press conference with local journalists at Iran's Arak heavy water facility that was carried live on Iranian state television.

(9,688 posts)When I think of the years of difficult and delicate diplomacy entailed in getting the Iran nuclear deal, not the least of which was overcoming the hardliners in BOTH Iran and the US against all political odds efforts that, no matter what the imperfections of the resulting agreement, merit IMHO a Nobel Peace Prize for Kerry, Moniz, Wendy Sherman, and their moderate counterparts in Iran Trump's decision to just walk away from all that cavalierly, and to thoughtlessnessly put us into this dangerous situation it just breaks my heart. And terrifies me.

(59,498 posts)Sadder still, I read a comment a few months ago by a State Department person from the Obama administration years, who commented that even if a Democrat won in 2020, it might be impossible to return to the deal they had. The reason is Iran has elections too - and the fact that Trump eliminated the gain they were to get has weakened Rouhani, while strengthening the hard liners. The 2021 President may face a very different Iranian leader -- and the amount of trust building needed would be daunting.
I remember even at the time a sense that Kerry and Moniz were very protective of their moderate Irani counterparts. They made it plain that they were lucky to have them as negotiators instead of the Iranian hardliners, and they seemed very aware that their Iranian colleagues were taking big political risks themselves.
It was the few political events that I've personally witnessed in real time when the good guys really did win. And not just by luck: they earned the victory by expertise, dedication, determination, and very hard work. Then this excrescence just blithely goes ahead and blows it (and -shudder- potentially, us) all up.

(2,412 posts)This is a Neocon wet dream! This is just what Bolton and his puppeteers want......an excuse to attack Iran. What utter stupidity to have broken the Iran Nuclear Agreement. Please dont call it a deal that is Trump talk. Deal is what we do to haggle over the price of a car. Iran is under threat from sanctions and from our navy so they have to take steps. This is the result that the Neocons want.
