Former Obama aide says Trump lied about past attempts to meet with Kim

Source: The Hill

By Kyle Balluck - 06/30/19 07:51 AM EDT

Ben Rhodes said early Sunday that President Trump was lying when he said the Obama administration repeatedly attempted to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un only to be rebuffed.

"Trump is lying. I was there for all 8 years. Obama never sought a meeting with Kim Jong Un. Foreign policy isn’t reality television it’s reality," Rhodes, who served as former President Obama's deputy national security adviser, tweeted.

"Photo ops don’t get rid of nuclear weapons, carefully negotiated agreements do," added Rhodes, who is now a political commentator. "Trump’s foreign policy is a failure - from NK to Iran to Venezuela."

Trump said earlier Sunday during a news conference with South Korean President Moon Jae-in that Obama "wanted to meet, and Chairman Kim would not meet him."

"The Obama administration was begging for a meeting. They were begging for meetings constantly. And Chairman Kim would not meet with him," Trump added. .......................................

I found a comment that Scott Snyder made on VOA a couple of days ago somewhat revealing. He said that Kim was merely "mirroring" Trump's behavior. This is an insight that I think is very true.

It isn't that one side or the other is "being played," as the vernacular goes, it's that both sides are "playing." Kim is being played as well. After all does anyone really think that this republican administration is going to seriously negotiate with a communist regime? Sign a peace treaty? Give security guarantees? After what happened at Hanoi, I'm surprised Kim would even meet with Trump again. It seems naïve or desperate. After what the US did to Iran in rejecting the JCPOA? Additionally, I don't see how he could possibly take Biegun and the working group negotiations seriously ever again. So he's just going along with the game. Part of it, is that he's desperate for sanctions relief. South Koreans too, want to take the negotiations seriously, how long is this artificial division of the country imposed by foreign powers going to continue? A century? Scott Snyder wouldn't go along with anything I've said here, but Kim is just "mirroring Trump," that much is true. I don't think anyone is serious, especially the US. The underlying US policy consensus seems to be regime change.

I think serious professional US negotiators could pull off an agreement eventually over years of work, step by step, action for action, simultaneously pursuing several tracks including denuclearization. Institutionally, however, the US seems incapable of doing this because of internal resistance across a broad range of interests domestically.

He is getting recognition. Something he never had before. Notice, he never says a word.

I watched yesterday, Kim grabbed the arm of his chair like he was getting ready to run. He is using Trump, has no intention in doing what Trump wants.
