How Jimmy Carter's Grandson Helped Leak the Secret Romney Fund-raiser Video

Last edited Tue Sep 18, 2012, 12:25 AM - Edit history (1)

Source: New York Magazine

The damning video of Mitt Romney telling a room of wealthy donors how he really feels about the free-loading 47 percent of Americans "who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it," among other candid things, has been floating around online in bits and pieces for three months, but didn't hit the big time until it was published by David Corn at Mother Jones today. Credited as a "research assistant" on the story is James Carter IV, the grandson of former President Jimmy Carter, who has been toiling online as an opposition researcher and is "currently looking for work," according to his Twitter bio. "I've been searching for clips on Republicans for a long time, almost every day," said Carter this evening. "I just do it for fun." But by connecting Corn with the mysterious uploader of the clip, Carter has uncovered his biggest story yet, one that could potentially affect the outcome of the election. (And get him a job.)

Carter told Daily Intel that he first noticed a portion of the video in which Romney discusses using Chinese labor while working at Bain Capital. That clip, uploaded by a YouTube user named "Rachel Maddow" in late May, has since been deleted, but eventually made it to Buzzfeed and Daily Kos.

Additional pieces of the tape were then added to a YouTube account called "Anne Onymous" starting three weeks ago. "There was a minor uproar about it on Twitter when I found [the first clip], so I kept doing research on it and that eventually led me to be able narrow down who it originated from," said Carter. Via Twitter, he contacted the person who claimed to have secretly taped and uploaded the video, and then sought to help publicize the remarks. "That seemed to be the purpose of [the filming] — to get it to a larger audience," Carter said.

Having worked with Corn before, Carter noted, "It was a natural fit." He put the anonymous video source in touch with the Mother Jones reporter and then butted out, knowing he was onto something. "Any time that you can find a clip that strengthens the narrative already established, that's what becomes a big deal," Carter explained. "I've been trying to get paid for this but it hasn't worked out yet. This might help."

... mention President Carter a LOT lately. "This is the first time since Jimmy Carter that we've had [insert statistic here]" or "the last President who had [insert spin here] was Jimmy Carter" or, of course, "It wasn't that complicated a feat. Even Jimmy Carter could have done it." Or some such.

They do think "Carter" is a dirty word, just as "Reagan" is so utterly beatific as to not even be uttered in the hushest of reverent whispers without first washing one's mouth out with holy rose water.

P.S. Great job, James IV!

foreign "riots" and equating all this to Jimmy Carter.

After the release of the hostages, I became a Democrat. I was - and still am - afraid of the Republican party that has so much power.

Later that same Republican party had the power to drag the President's private sex life all over the tv.

I dread to think what their "October surprise" will be.

This should be everywhere but I've only heard about it here for the first time. What a complete jerk. I knew his "gosh I'm just a regular guy who happens to be very wealthy" act was all a bunch of crap. That is why he comes across so stiff, he's acting completely opposite with the public to what his real personality is. We will be totally screwed if he somehow ends up winning (stealing) the election. We would have to move away to my husband's home country of Great Britain. I couldn't bear a Romney presidency. It would be hell.

This story has been around a while.
Here's a link to a story from CBS on this subject from last June:

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-57458601-503544/report-romney-talks-tough-on-china-but-bain-was-key-player-in-outsourcing-trend/

Mother Jones from July:
http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2012/07/bain-capital-mitt-romney-outsourcing-china-global-tech

And the Washington Post from June:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/business/economy/romneys-bain-capital-invested-in-companies-that-moved-jobs-overseas/2012/06/21/gJQAsD9ptV_print.html

The fact is that Romney has been part of every economic development that has enriched the 1% at the expense of the American middle class for the last 30 years. This story is out there and it has legs, because it's true. I think it has not gotten the coverage it deserves simply because outsourcing and offshoring are simply seen as normal, an accepted part of economic life in the new American oligarchy.
