2 Chicago mothers working to stop gun violence shot dead
Source: CBS News
Two women who worked with a group called Mothers Against Senseless Killings to try to stop gun violence in their South Side Chicago neighborhood were killed by bullets that police don't believe were intended for them on the same corner where they would often hand out food and bring children to play. The gunfire on Friday night was instead meant for a man who is affiliated with a Chicago street gang and recently got out of prison, police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said.
The 58-year-old man, who was struck in the arm in the shooting and whose name hasn't been released, is not cooperating with police, Guglielmi said.
"We have no information to suggest they were the intended targets," he said Tuesday, adding that police are still seeking leads in the case. No arrests have been made.
The deaths of 26-year-old Chantell Grant and 35-year-old Andrea Stoudemire in the Englewood neighborhood served as a grim reminder of the kind of violence that led them to join Mothers Against Senseless Killings. The anti-violence group launched five years ago following the shooting death of another young mother at the same corner. The group began with moms "occupying" the corner, reports the Chicago Sun-Times -- hanging out and offering food and counseling for youth in response to violence in the community.

(6,212 posts)two women being killed by the very thing they were fighting against. Will this horrible event make some impact on trying to stop all the senseless killing. Chantell Grant and Andrea Stoudemire were two brave good women who deserve to be honored and remembered.

"Just before 10 p.m. Friday, a blue SUV rolled by 75th Street and Stewart Avenue, where MASK sets up shop, and someone fired shots into a crowd, Chicago police said. Grant and Stoudemire were killed, and a man was grazed in the arm."

Why did I want to know?...I worked at a high school at 6201 Stewart Avenue for 12 years. That school was one and one half miles from that location of this shooting It was a rough neighborhood and a rough school to teach at. Nevertheless, many of the students were wonderful people. One of the students I had in the 70s, I am still in touch with on Facebook. I did a little research, the school that I taught at has been closed since about 2008.
.......... What horrific story...
