Fourth board member resigns from NRA in a sign of further upheaval

Source: Washington Post

Julie Golob, a professional sport shooter and a strong public advocate for gun rights, announced Monday she was resigning from the National Rifle Association board before the end of her three-year term.

She is the fourth member in the past two weeks to leave the board of the NRA in a sign of further upheaval within the nation’s most powerful gun rights group.

Since North’s departure, the organization has been roiled by allegations of self-dealing, including a report last week that LaPierre sought to have the nonprofit organization buy him a luxury mansion in 2018 after a mass shooting at a Florida high school.

Pressure has also mounted on the organization in the wake of last week’s shootings in Dayton, Ohio, and El Paso. As a chorus again demands background checks and other restrictions on firearms sales, gun-control advocates say Golob’s departure adds to the sense that the NRA is vulnerable.

1. Republicans are so screwed. They thought gun voters were all on their side.

And they were. The only people voting for guns were progun and on their side.

But things have changed. Bigly!

Suburban white women voted republican for security but now see guns as the greatest threat to their children and that means republicans who support them.

But republicans can’t change. Their base has drank the cool-aid and won’t support anything less than full militarization of all of us.

We own those Parkland Kids. They started this.

6. I have a question.

The NRA is important to Republicans because they send money-sometimes Russian money-to candidates and keep a portion of voters agitated. But now the NRA has financial issues. They’ve laid off employees and raided pension funds. The Russians can no longer contribute under the radar, at least not in the way they did in 2016.

The positions taken by the NRA are so extreme that they’re nutty. Polls show public opinion, even among NRA members, is strongly against them.

Why, why, why are the Republicans still Velcro-ed to them? I guess I should be happy about it?

10. Corporate interests and funding corrupts almost without fail.

Many public organizations (including charities and universities) with original good intentions become corrupt after allowing massive corporate sponsorships. They become shills for the companies, drift away from their original missions, and leaders are often bribed.

Gun and ammo manufacturers and owners are simply another sector the GOP has co-opted to gain votes and campaign contributions, along with many of our churches and private schools.

The reason the GOP went after the gun and church sectors is because they can use fear of losing something (guns, religious rights, etc.) to capture votes and funding from organized groups.

7. There should be a thorough....

audit of the NRA's finances. All money in - and where it came from - and all money out - and who is went to. I think they'd lose beaucoup members if they knew where their dues are really going.

9. Obviously, LaPiere

gets the lion's share. With his salary, perks, shopping sprees and real estate, he is the KING. Members should be aware of where their dues are going. Wayne and politicians (gop) are the beneficiaries. WHY is this organization a non-profit? Anyone associated with the NRA is contributing to the destruction of this country. They really should find other ways to exert their manhood, rather than carry weapons.

12. I want to live long enough to see them gone completely.

They've been a curse on our country for decades now. The damage done to our society is real and continues each day. I want them and their propaganda machine and their influence on our government gone.

13. How can NRA still be non-profit if most of their funding now comes from overseas

gun manufacturers?

16. Why do you think that is the case?

I suspect members dues are the largest single source.

17. Hence, the precipitous drop in NRA membership dues by roughly $36 million

and the $19 million from a single anonymous donor after accepting a similarly-sized $20 million contribution. Six additional unidentified donors gave more than $1 million each.

But sure... member dues.

15. The NRA is at the point

that they are going to have to return to pre-1970's/pre-ILA mandate.
