New York Times demotes editor who sparked fury

Source: CNN

New York (CNN Business)Jonathan Weisman, the deputy Washington editor for The New York Times (NYT), has been demoted after a pair of incidents in which he ignited controversy on Twitter (TWTR), the newspaper said Tuesday.

"Jonathan Weisman met with [Times Executive Editor Dean Baquet] today and apologized for his recent serious lapses in judgment. As a consequence of his actions, he has been demoted and will no longer be overseeing the team that covers Congress or be active on social media. We don't typically discuss personnel matters but we're doing so in this instance with Jonathan's knowledge," a Times spokesperson said in a statement.

Over the last few weeks, Weisman had faced a barrage of criticism for his behavior on social media.

In late July, Weisman deleted a tweet amid outrage after he suggested Democratic Reps. Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar were not truly from the Midwest and their colleague Rep. John Lewis, a prominent figure in the civil rights movement, was not from the Deep South. The tweets were widely viewed as racist.

Or who they are supporting anymore. JUST imho, if they would stick to the news, not soooo many op ed pieces, it would play itself out

They pulled him off covering politics.

For all we know, this may be an older editor near retirement, perhaps with health or memory issues, or a family to support. He may have years of good work under his belt for all we know.

The Times is no doubt looking at him as a whole person. He may be fine to cover another beat like food or sports until he retires.

A lot of years of training goes into news editors and reporters at major newspapers.

He stands warned, and I'm sure if he does anything else that seems politically biased or racist he would be let go.
