Obama responds to Romney's 'victims' comments

NEW YORK — President Barack Obama is chiding Republican Mitt Romney for referring to supporters of the president as victims who depend on the government. Obama says anyone who wants to be president has to "work for everyone, not just for some."

Appearing on the "Late Show" with David Letterman, Obama offered his first comments to the Romney remarks that have roiled the Republican presidential nominee's campaign.

A secret video of Romney's remarks at a May fundraiser showed that he said 47 percent of people will vote for Obama no matter what and they "believe that they are victims." Romney added that his job is "not to worry about those people."

Obama says "there are not a lot of people out there who think they are victims" or entitled.

2. This is what gets to me the most

Romney, more than any other candidate in my recent memory, is basically saying, "Yea, there's 47 percent of people who will vote for Obama. Screw them. I don't need their votes. As long as I get yours, we can do whatever we want."

Obama ought to just hammer away at the fact that the president has to be president of ALL the people, whether they voted for him or not. Obama has always tried to reach out to even the worst haters (often to his detriment), but it's one of the things I admire about him. Romney is just Dubya II, without the "Let's have a beer together" appeal (not that he ever appealed to me). Dubya also waltzed in claiming mandates when half the country was against him. But rather than trying to unite us, he decided that if half the country liked him, then by golly, he didn't give a crap about the rest of us.

Romney is scum. And for me, that's why. Not that he sees the country as us-vs.-them, but that he clearly plans to govern that way.
