Weapons found in Michelle Kolts' home. HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE
Tampa, Florida Police were called to a Tampa-area home where inside they discovered an arsenal of two dozen metal-stuffed pipe bombs and fuses as well as a cache of guns and other weapons.
Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister said "it's frightening to think of the catastrophic damage and loss of life" that could have been done with the weapons.
Twenty-seven-year-old Michelle Kolts who works at this maintenance supply business was arrested early Friday morning. She's charged with 24 counts of making a destructive device with intent to harm. There were also books and DVDs focused on murder, mass killings, domestic terror and bomb-making found in the home. Kolts lives with her parents, who turned her in.
"Every law enforcement officer in the world always says if you see something say something," Chronister said. "I couldn't applaud these parents more for having the courage to do just that."

Michelle Kolts: Woman Had 24 Pipe Bombs, Consumed by Columbine, Cops Say
Michelle Kolts is the Florida woman who is accused of building and possessing 24 pipe bombs that could have claimed significant lives and done catastrophic damage, the Hillsborough County Sheriffs Office has said. Kolts, 27, is a resident of Wimauma, Florida, a community just south of Tampa.
Online records show that Kolts was arrested at her job. Kolts was then taken to her home where she admitted to making the bombs, according to Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister. Her home is located along the 5000 block of Jagged Cloud Drive. Kolts was taken into custody just before midnight on October 3. Those records show that Kolts is being held on a bond of $180,000. Among her possessions was a copy of the white supremacist book, The Turner Diaries.
Kolts is facing charges of 24 counts of making a destructive device which is a second-degree felony. If found guilty on all charges, Kolts could face 15 years in prison.

(43,115 posts)The parents made a tough call, but ... what took them so long?
Nay
(12,051 posts)parents had done what they could to help her, but finally had to turn her in when she advanced to the stage where she was building bombs.
Bless those parents. Bless them. They probably saved dozens of lives by turning her in.

Mental health treatment is vague and could be anything
"She became consumed with the Columbine and Oklahoma killings," Chronister said. "So at the time, she wasn't diagnosed with any type of mental health diagnosis. She stated at the time she wasn't, her intention wasn't to harm anyone."

Meanwhile she had Turner Diaries which makes the person a likely white supremacist. A lot of times a mass shooting itself can inspire other mass shootings.
We need to do something about our gun laws.

So whether that is after the arrest, or before ... not entirely clear.

(29,322 posts)I see a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist once a every few months to see how I am doing and refills prescriptions. That is mental health treatment but I don't have a therapist.
Mental health treatment can include hospitalization inpatient or outpatient, medication, etc.
It isn't specific.
In any case a doctor will ask "do you feel like hurting yourself or others?" and if you say no they aren't going to hold you.

(43,115 posts)Pharmacology is traditionally handled by prescribing psychiatrists. They renew with a Specialist now? Save money and make medications more available.
Hospitalization for mental health treatment doesn't necessarily involve a therapist? It's mental health treatment, someone licensed in the mental health field is seeing the patient or supervising those seeing the patient.

(29,322 posts)I guess those situations involve a therapist. I was saying I receive mental health treatment without seeing a therapist. There are so many different mental illness that I would guess the treatments for them vary.
I wanted to know what she is there for and what if any diagnosis did they make.
The reason why this important to me
--
As family physicians, we are no strangers to mental health care. In fact, my most common diagnoses (after "health maintenance" are anxiety and depression. Every day, I see patients who are struggling with sleep, appetite, concentration and energy. These are hallmarks of mental health issues. Committing a mass shooting is not.
That's why it's important for family physicians to combat the persistent myth that mental illness is a leading factor in mass shootings. This is unsupported by evidence.
Study(psychiatryonline.org) after study(www.sciencedirect.com) has demonstrated that people with mental health issues commit only a miniscule percentage of mass shootings and account for less than 1% of annual gun homicides. According to a study based on Swedish data published in the American Journal of Psychiatry, only 3%-5% of violent crimes are perpetrated by someone with a mental illness.(ajp.psychiatryonline.org) In fact, people with serious mental illnesses are more likely to be the victims of violence.(www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov) And the vast majority of gun deaths in America are from suicide, meaning those with mental illness are far more likely to harm themselves than others.
Blaming mental illness only serves to further stigmatize patients who have mental health issues as inherently dangerous. And it deflects attention from a real predictor of mass shootings: easy access to guns.

I worry that something like this can be dismissed as mental illness and nothing will be done but guns.

(However, from the photo, Kolts seems to have kept the place very tidy and neat)

Last year, police went to the Kolts' home after receiving a tip that she had placed an online order for material on pipe bomb construction. But they determined she was not a threat.
If the police went and said she was not a threat, maybe the parents assumed she wasn't as long as she was receiving therapy
There was a red flag however
