LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell vows to stop any Democratic push for impeachment in a social media campaign ad that he's using as a platform to raise campaign funds off the inquiry of President Donald Trump.
In the brief Facebook video, McConnell makes it clear that the Republican-controlled Senate with him in charge will be a firewall against efforts to remove Trump from office.
"All of you know your Constitution," McConnell says in the video. "The way that impeachment stops is with a Senate majority with me as majority leader."
The Senate leader, a steadfast Trump defender, avoided the impeachment issue during public appearances in his home state of Kentucky this past week.

(26,044 posts)...Trumps cratering popularity becomes a hazard for his party at which point, hell quietly give the approval for enough senators in swing states to vote to convict, while he himself continues to express never-ending loyalty to 45.

(1,803 posts)A juror would be removed for expressing an opinion before assessing evidence, and a judge would be required to recuse him or herself. I cant imaging there is law on the issue, but it seems utterly inappropriate for the Senate majority leader to prejudge the issue and in essence promise to disregard evidence to curry political favor.

(46,028 posts)If House acts on impeachment, Senate must have trial, Mitch McConnell says
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said months ago that if the House goes ahead and impeaches President Donald Trump, the Senate has no choice but to conduct a trial to determine whether the president is removed from office.
The Kentucky Republican told NPR that if the House were to act, the Senate immediately goes into a trial. McConnell made the comments long before House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced the House would begin an impeachment inquiry into the president.
McConnell had not previously indicated whether the Senate would act on any articles of impeachment, though the Constitution anticipates that it would. Its commonly assumed that the GOP-held chamber would acquit Trump just as Democrats held together in 1999 to deny the GOP House from winning a conviction of President Bill Clinton.

(5,586 posts)Itll be a show trial, but itll have the look of a legit inquiry. Comey, Clapper, McCabe, Orr, the Fusion GPS people, the whistleblowers, Strozk, Page; theyll all be up there under oath answering questions from Trumps attorneys on live TV.
Basically, itll be a goat rodeo.
