Defense Intelligence Agency employee charged with leaking classified information to journalists

Source: Washington Post

A counter-terrorism analyst for the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency has been charged with leaking top secret details about a foreign country’s weapons systems to two journalists, including a reporter with whom he was apparently romantically involved, according to a federal indictment unsealed Wednesday.

Henry K. Frese, 30, of Alexandria, Va., “was caught red-handed disclosing sensitive national security information for personal gain,” the Justice Department said in a statement announcing the indictment. “The unauthorized disclosure of TOP SECRET information could reasonably be expected to cause exceptionally grave harm to the national security of the United States.” Frese, who had a high-level security clearance, is due to appear in U.S. District Court in Alexandria on Wednesday, charged with willful transmission of national defense information. Authorities said he was arrested Wednesday morning when he arrived at his workplace in Virginia.

The two journalists were not immediately identified, but one of them, a woman, was apparently romantically involved with Frese and shared an Alexandria residence with him from August 2017 to August 2018, authorities said. They would not say whether she works for a U.S.- or foreign-based news organization. The top secret information that Frese allegedly gave her, in April and May 2018, concerned the capabilities of a foreign nation’s weapons systems. Authorities declined to identify the foreign country.

At the woman’s urging, Frese allegedly passed additional top secret information to one of her colleagues at “an affiliated but different news outlet.” Authorities said Frese’s apparent motive was to help the woman advance in her career.

Henry Kyle Frese, a counterterrorism analyst, is accused in federal court in Alexandria, Va., of providing classified material to two journalists in 2018 and 2019. One report related to a foreign country’s weapon systems, court papers state.

A Justice Department statement said Frese, 30, “was caught red-handed disclosing sensitive national security information.”

This is a developing story. It will be updated.

3. That's for certain!

I seem to be spending much of my free time following this nightmare and it only gets worse by the day. At least for the past six months I have had a major distraction that took up most of my time but now that the weather has changed, I have a lot of time to pay attention more. But I still catch up every day, just like the past two impeachment episodes, I can't not pay very close attention and it's making me mad and upset.

4. Not so fast. It's not a whistle-blower or an anti-tRump leaker. So I suspect caught in routine check

It may have been a less routine check made by tRump zealots in the department looking for wbs or anti-tRump leakers but I say odds are better than even that the guy did what the article said he did.

5. I'm trying to figure out what's "fishy" about it as well

Just this week, they caught a US citizen originally from China who was working for the Chinese, and there didn't seem to be anything odd about that one. I don't know what makes this one odd.

Is the idea that there is some legitimate reason why a DIA analyst would be giving information about foreign weapon systems to a journalist with whom he was sleeping, and apparently broke up with a year ago?

9. Okay... is it still "fishy"?

The indictment and a search warrant affidavit are posted here:

Sounds like he was rolled for information by a pair of "journalists".

10. Just read it

and am now wondering what story was published. Apparently the latest incident happened just last month and suddenly someone woke up and moved quick on him. They seemed to have been unsure about the initial incidents last year (despite the fact that these systems have audit trails).

6. Yeah when the updated article came out, there were more details

But it will be interesting to see more down the road and I am wondering if the "country" being referenced, may have been Israel.

12. Thanks for that. Seems businessinsider is guessing who the journalists were

Based on publicly available information on social media, Journalist 1 appears to be CNBC's Amanda Macias. Other media reports have confirmed as much, and The Wall Street Journal reported that Journalist 2 is NBC's Courtney Kube.
