Democrat challenging Mitch McConnell raises $10.7 million in third quarter

Source: CBS News

Amy McGrath, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's leading Democratic opponent in the 2020 Kentucky Senate race, raised $10.7 million in the third quarter of 2019 after launching her campaign in July. McGrath, who narrowly lost a House race in 2018, has already proven her ability to draw large donations, as her campaign raised $2.5 million in the 24 hours after declaring her campaign.

McGrath's campaign received 299,000 contributions, with an average donation of $36, according to her campaign. Significantly, McGrath's third quarter haul is greater than that of several presidential candidates.

"Mitch McConnell has never faced an opponent like Amy McGrath. Not only does a new independent poll show the race tied, but more than a quarter-million grassroots donations-from all 120 Kentucky counties-have provided us a record-shattering first quarter of nearly $11 million to take down McConnell and his self-serving special interest allies. Change is coming," McGrath campaign manager Mark Nickolas said in a statement, referring to a poll of registered and likely voters by AARP showing McConnell ahead of McGrath by one percentage point.

McConnell, who has represented Kentucky in the Senate since 1985, has easily dispatched Democratic challengers in previous elections. However, the senator is deeply unpopular in the state, and is the least popular senator in the country, with a disapproval rating of 50% in his home state, according to Morning Consult.

Easily dispatch competitors in other elections. Almost every race was close. He is not well like in Kentucky.

I predict Mitch will retire. He said he almost did in the last election.

Elaine Chao is pouring money into Ky.

If McGrath ties McConnell to Trump and shows that McConnell has done nothing to help farmers, she might have a chance. Unfortunately, McConnell seems to have an operation that ensures he wins even though most Kentuckians do not like him. He is not above buying votes and cheating.

rode 10 hours on a bus to meet with McConnell in Washington. Most suffer from black-lung disease, and republicans want to stop mining companies' monetary responsibility for treatment. McConnell wouldn't even meet with them, after a 10 hour bus trip to see him! Coal miners have a hard-on for Moscow Mitch too!

The race is now so close that repubs will be spending important resources defending a seat which should be a shoe-in.

I really really really want to see Moscow Mitch gone..... I'll be sending a donation tonight.

I can do some serious wishing that the force under-girding the Universe will finally tilt back to the right direction.

In the 1930’s after a time of vast income inequality, blatant political corruption, and a national economy that left millions homeless and penniless the Republican Party was consigned to the political wilderness. Great progress was made in income, labor rights, and political power by a dominant Democratic Party.

The Republicans were consigned to a minority status that forced them to work across the aisle to accomplish anything.

Given that the Southern Democrats were unabashed racists some of the more statesmanlike politicians were often Republicans.

Then came the crazy. Goldwater, Nixon... Again, they returned to what looked like permanent minority status. But, like termites, the Republican faithful never stopped working to regain ascendancy. When Reagan came they swarmed. A toxic cloud of money, corruption, real politic and a rock solid alignment with the ever more gargantuan corporations allowed for a steady amassing of unrivaled political power.

The Chamber of Commerce, the Federalist society focused on political co-option of the Judicial Branch and some truly brilliant marketing of Reagan combined with stagflation allowed the camel to pass through the eye of the needle and into the political mainstream.

Gingrich, Karl Rove, Dubya, the theft of multiple presidential election all flowed from The Reagan Revolution when the American citizenry lost its collective mind and any hint of a moral center—has led directly to Trump and the current Republicans.

They will not endure, but the question is will America in any recognizable form also cease to exist? Or is it dead already?

The Roman’s didn’t really understand that their Republic was dead until a few emperors in. An argument could be made that the brutal truth was never really admitted and acknowledged by the elite.

Democrat Amy McGrath tried to make new ally on Tuesday morning as she announced before a national audience she would challenge Republican Senate Leader Mitch McConnell in the 2020 election.

McConnell, she said, has prevented President Donald Trump from accomplishing much of his agenda during his first two and a half years in office.

What the hell is a "pro-trump Democrat???"

Everything I've read about her says she's an anti-Trump democrat, and a very anti-McConnell democrat. That article is full of contradictions. They quote Trump as saying she's "too liberal for Kentucky". It was written right after she announced her campaign, so maybe they got things a little messed up. I get campaign updates from her almost daily. She's an anti-Trump democrat, believe me.

she's a moderate democrat. I doubt you'll see a lot of 'medicare for all' coming from her. I think she still wants to let people keep their over-priced private insurance if they like, but she IS a democrat, and she'd be far more beneficial to the people of Kentucky - and the United States - than Moscow Mitch. I have no fear of helping her get elected.

McConnell is my most despised republican, and there's just so damned many to choose from! Some days Graham leaps into first place, somedays it's Jordan, but as a whole McTurtle takes the "coveted" second spot.

I've been a monthly donor since she launched her campaign, and I always throw in again when she sends out appeals. Yes, I have a hard-on for Moscow Mitch. I'll give 'til it hurts to get his obstructing turtle ass defeated, and I live in New York. Imagine if I were from Kentucky?

Before the 2020 elections are over I'll be broke, but it will be for a righteous cause!
