U.S., Turkey agree to 5-day ceasefire in Syria, Pence says, to let Kurds withdraw after U.S. pullout
Source: Washington Post
ISTANBUL -- Vice President Pence said Thursday that Turkey had agreed to a cease-fire in Syria, more than a week after the government of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan launched an offensive against Syrian Kurdish fighters who had previously allied with the United States.
Pence, speaking after hours of meetings in Ankara, the Turkish capital, with Erdogan and other Turkish officials, said that Turkey had agreed to pause its offensive for five days while the United States helped facilitate the withdrawal of the Kurdish fighters from a swath of northeastern Syria. Following their withdrawal, Turkey's military operation would be "halted entirely," Pence said. "Great news out of Turkey," President Trump wrote on Twitter, shortly before Pence's announcement. "Millions of lives will be saved!" he added.
Pence's whirlwind trip to Turkey came just a week after the start of a military operation that had hastened the withdrawal of U.S. troops and scrambled alliances in Syria's volatile civil war. Turkey's western allies have warned Erdogan that the fighting could lead to the resurgence of the Islamic State militant group.
The Trump administration had faced criticism for the perception that it abandoned its own allies: the Syrian Kurdish militias who partnered with the U.S. military to fight the Islamic State. Turkey views the Kurdish fighters as a grave threat because of their links to militants in Turkey. Pence said that the Kurdish fighters would honor the deal struck between the United States and Turkey. "We have repeated assurances from them that they will be going out," he said, referring to the Syrian Kurdish fighters.

We have defeated ISIS in Syria, my only reason for being there during the Trump Presidency.

(36,745 posts)Its Syria. The combined forces of the Kurds and Syrian army are going to continue to fight Turkish invaders. Its their land, not Turkeys.

(128,717 posts)It's a cross-border invasion. It's like the U.S. military crossing over into Mexico and bombing along the border on the Mexican side.

trumpeted Trumpolain.
This is even more overly ridiculous than Trump's mentor, Neville Chamberlain, who trumpeted, "Peace In Our Time"
'We will suspend the Peace Spring operation for 120 hours for the PKK/YPG to withdraw. This is not a ceasefire,' Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said.
... Additionally, the U.S. has agreed to lift the economic sanctions it imposed on Turkey once the permanent cease fire goes into affect.
... the agreement gives Turkey what it wanted with its military operation and the country is under no obligation to withdraw its troops.
And the sanctions relief means the country will suffer no economic penalty from its military operation.More:

(19,558 posts)That's not what took place here. This is no deal, it's a farce to let Trump wave his hands and say they did what he wanted and not impose the sanctions on Turkey.
We are weak thanks to Trump. We "negotiated" from a point of zero power and this lack of a deal shows how weak we are diplomatically now under Trump.
Erdogan won everything he wanted.
Putin won everything he wanted.
Iran is also extremely pleased here.
The Kurds, our allies, were murdered and are being forced from their land and homes at gunpoint.
America has lost all respectability to our allies. We've effectively isolated ourselves and silenced our once strong voice for justice and democracy across the globe.
Putin got everything he wanted and more out of Trump.
