Rick Perry stares down subpoena deadline in Trump impeachment probe, one day after resignation

WASHINGTON – Energy Secretary Rick Perry faces a subpoena deadline Friday to turn over documents relating to House Democrats' impeachment inquiry of President Donald Trump, a day after he offered his resignation.

Speaking to reporters at an event in Alvarado, Texas, on Thursday, Trump said Perry would stay on until the end of the year, but spoke positively of the former Texas governor. "We already have his replacement. Rick has done a fantastic job. But it was time," Trump told reporters.

Other Trump administration officials, such as Vice President Mike Pence, have declined to hand over documents to House Democrats as the White House vows not cooperate in an investigation it considers partisan. Perry has previously declined to commit to complying with the subpoena.

“The House has sent a subpoena over for the records that we have, and our general counsel and the White House counsel are going through the process right now," Perry said on Fox Business in a Wednesday morning interview. "I’m going to follow the lead of my counsel on that.”

Perry won’t to say whether he’ll comply with deadline on subpoenaed documents in Trump impeachment inquiry

Energy Secretary Rick Perry declined to say whether he would comply with a Friday deadline to produce subpoenaed documents relevant to an impeachment inquiry that has increasingly shown President Trump orchestrating an effort to pressure Ukraine to dig up dirt on a potential 2020 political rival.

Also, a deposition planned for Friday of a senior career official at the Defense Department has been postponed until next week. House investigators expect Laura Cooper to provide details about the nearly $400 million in military aid that was withheld from Ukraine as Trump pressed the country’s president to investigate former vice president Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden.

Republicans, meanwhile, seized on a Washington Post report that a career State Department official overseeing Ukraine policy told congressional investigators this week that he had raised concerns in early 2015 about Biden’s son serving on the board of a Ukrainian energy company.

Democrats, meanwhile, remain abuzz about acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney’s acknowledgment at a news conference Thursday that Trump withheld nearly $400 million in military aid in part to pressure Ukraine to pursue an investigation that could benefit him politically. The affirmation prompted the White House to scramble to reframe Mulvaney’s comments.

6. With the "live update" thing, the original title & article are down towards the bottom of that page

as - 9:15 a.m.: Perry defends Trump, won’t say if he’ll comply with subpoena

(a PITA )

I found a USA Today article with the same info so will substitute!

I just posted a new LBN about Perry's replacement anyway.

7. 'Stared down' sounds tough. Other descriptions would be 'Dawdled through', 'Sat in Paralyzed Fear

through', 'Plays possum through' subpoena deadline.
