Alabama jury convicts police officer of manslaughter for killing unarmed black man

Source: Fox News

Former Montgomery, Ala. police officer Aaron Cody Smith was convicted of manslaughter Friday for fatally shooting Gregory Gunn, an unarmed black man, in 2016.

Smith was charged with murder, but the jury was given the option to consider a lesser charge of manslaughter.

District Attorney Daryl Bailey said he would ask for Smith to receive the maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, according to WBRC.

Smith shot Gunn, 58, as he was walking home late at night. The officer had called Gunn over for a stop-and-frisk, at which point he fled.

He convinced a jury in a county that is three quarters white and that Trump carried by 50 points to convict a white cop for killing an unarmed black man.

I lived not too far from there for several years. I can just imagine the death threats and other harassment he - and his family - can expect to receive for the next few weeks.

Another POS cop taken off the streets and, hopefully, put behind bars for the maximum time allowed under the sentencing guidelines.

Kudos to the DA who put on a great prosecution and huge kudos to the jury for seeing that this was a bad cop and convicting him.

but I think he'll weather the storm and maybe run for higher office.

We need many, many more brave DA's like him to go after these racist rogue cops.

It won't be easy as long as Mango Menace is in the White House.

As you know, h deliberately encourages the worst in our police officers in general.

"The trial was moved from mostly black Montgomery to Ozark, Ala. 85 miles away at the request of the defense because of the publicity the case received in Montgomery."
