New congressional maps in North Carolina will stand for 2020, court rules
Source: Charlotte Observer
WASHINGTON A three-judge panel ruled Monday that new congressional maps passed by state lawmakers last month can stand for the 2020 election. The court also opened filing for U.S. House candidates. "The net result is the grievous and flawed 2016 map has been replaced," Judge Paul Ridgeway said. Monday marked the opening of the filing period for the 2020 election, but the judges had blocked filing in the congressional races as they considered the maps. Still candidates were announcing congressional runs even before the ruling -- particularly in the two districts that are expected to swing toward Democrats under the legislature's new map. 3. From the Citizen-Times:

But Democratic Chair Wayne Goodwin said legislative leaders had used the timing of the primaries to avoid creating fairer maps. "Republicans yet again (ran) out the clock on fair maps, denying justice to North Carolina voters and forcing our state to go another election using undemocratic district lines," Goodwin said in a statement. Better, but not there yet ... |

6. But it's not all bad either.
The plaintiffs could still appeal to the North Carolina Supreme Court, and although its 6-1 Democratic majority is no guarantee of success, there could still be hope for a more favorable outcome based on what happened in 2016: A federal court struck down the GOP's original gerrymander in February of that year, and it was redrawn that month, with the primary being delayed until June. The state court in this most recent case cited the desire to avoid disrupting the March 2020 primary schedule, but officials could theoretically delay the primary if that ruling were overturned on appeal. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ALSO:

New map replaces current 10R-3D plan w/ an 8R-5D breakdown. But, ruling will disappoint Dems, who sued for additional opportunities. *Dems could still appeal to NC Supreme Court but candidate filing opens today. https://t.co/6KTQRpLpyN |

7. Seems to me
Dems in safe seats sold out the rest of us to insure their seats remained safe, by voting to accept the GOP redraw.
