That no personal firearms were allowed to be carried on base. At some point, they loosened that rule after the nra started pushing politicians to rattle dod over it.

I guess they knew it probably wasn't such a great idea to let soldiers who might be suffering ptsd, or who were under extreme stress in their family life, to have easy access to firearms.

Who could have guessed they were right?

but since they can't search every car that drives on base, like all gun free zones there is nothing stopping someone from ignoring the law.

To support the claim the DoD has changed their policy?

I have business that takes me to a military installation monthly; they have the same signage prohibiting personal weapons that they have had there for many years.

From what i remember it only applies tomilitary personel, and basically made it easier for soldiers to ask for permission to keep guns on base.

Its not a blanket lifting. Soldiers need the permission of the base commander. They just made iy easier to get.

UPDATE 7:30 a.m. A spokesperson for the Escambia County Sheriff's Office confirmed that authorities are working to "take down" an active shooter on base at NAS Pensacola.

Amber Southard, spokeswoman for the ECSO, said little information is available at the moment, but shots have been fired on base and a heavy law enforcement presence is there to eliminate the threat.

Scanner traffic for Escambia County Fire and Rescue indicated ten patients are being transported to local hospitals.

Three medical helicopters are in route and several military ambulances have also been seen in the area.

Military personnel are trained to shoot at the enemy. I don't know about now, but entrants used to be screened for fitness. Just because the guns are handy, didn't mean the soldier/sailor/pilot would/should/could use it for wholesale slaughter on perceived enemies because of personal difficulties.

12. Pensacola Shooting Updates: Gunman Was Saudi National

Dec 2019

Three people were shot dead early Friday at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Fla., and the gunman has been identified as a Saudi national, according to three sources familiar with the investigation.

The authorities have not publicly named the gunman, who was killed by a sheriff’s deputy. Capt. Timothy F. Kinsella Jr., the base’s commanding officer, declined to comment on whether the shooting is being investigated as an act of terrorism. The Pensacola base is known to host international students for flight training.

Two deputies were shot, one in the arm and one in the knee, but are expected to recover, the sheriff said. The base employs more than 16,000 military personnel and 7,400 civilians.

The Saudi National was here for training. They cannot be trusted. If Trump likes them so much because they obviously have a monetary relationship, let him host them in Turkey or some other place.

ABC News has obtained a photograph of the identification card that was found on the body of the Pensacola shooter.

Armed with a semi-automatic handgun with an extended magazine, the shooter opened fire in a classroom building on Friday morning. He was apparently firing at random and at one point was slowed when somebody barricaded a door, allowing others to flee out of the building.

Sources told ABC News that investigators are working to determine if the shooter was acting out because of religious or ideological reasons or if there was some sort of problem or hostility that developed in the course of the training at Pensacola.

Investigators have found what purports to be an online screed written by the shooter and are working to determine if it is legitimate. In it, the writer expresses hatred toward Americans because of crimes against Muslims and humanity as well as US support for Israel.

Alshamrani began hist raining in August 2017, and it was scheduled to last until August 2020. His program included English language training, basic aviation, and initial pilot training.
