NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) — John F. Kennedy's daughter Caroline will participate in the christening of a new aircraft carrier that's named after the 35th U.S. president.

Newport News Shipbuilding said the christening of the USS John Kennedy will occur Saturday at the shipyard in Newport News, Virginia.

Caroline Kennedy is the sponsor of her father's namesake ship. She will smash a bottle of American sparkling wine across the carrier's hull.

The ship is the second of the U.S. Navy's new Ford-Class of aircraft carriers. The new carrier is designed to carry and fly more planes with fewer sailors.

It was when she and I were both about ten years old. Sorta had a crush on her back then, but I suppose lots of boys did.

I guess it needed too many upgrades/repairs. She had been in service for 40 years.

My youngest brother was assigned to her in August 2001 for his sea duty.

After nearly 40 years of service in the United States Navy, Kennedy was officially decommissioned on 1 August 2007. She is berthed at the NAVSEA Inactive Ships On-site Maintenance facility in Philadelphia and, until late 2017, was available for donation as a museum and memorial to a qualified organization.[1][7] In late 2017, the Navy revoked her "donation hold" status and designated her for dismantling.[4] The name has been adopted by the future Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy (CVN-79).

if there is ever a USS Donald J Trump, the ship's nickname will probably be extremely hilarious.

"The Big Stick" – USS Theodore Roosevelt
"The Big E" – USS Enterprise

I am sure that we can have some real fun here.
