U.K. election: Polls put Boris Johnson on track for a pro-Brexit victory
Source: Axios
U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson appears to be steaming toward the parliamentary majority he desperately desires to pass his Brexit deal and end the gridlock in Westminster.
Why it matters: Thursdays vote is the culmination of three years of intense efforts to deliver Brexit, and to block it. The rocky road Johnson has plodded along since replacing Theresa May in July would become much smoother with a resounding electoral mandate.
Driving the news: This has been a brutal campaign fought by two leaders who are disliked and distrusted by broad swaths of the public.
Johnson has been accused of repeatedly misleading voters, while opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn has been charged with allowing anti-Semitism to fester within his Labour Party.
Opponents of Brexit now believe the only thing that can stop a Johnson majority is tactical voting, with voters selecting Labour or the fiercely anti-Brexit Liberal Democrats depending on which party is more likely to defeat the local Conservative candidate.

(7,429 posts)Wait until it all hits the fan. Brits will wonder what hit them. The Scots will push for independence again, Ulster will go bonkers with their trade barriers with the Republic, trade barriers with the EU will cost them more. The UK is voluntarily creating massive problems for themselves. They've a gun to their heads and are eager to pull the trigger. By this time next year, the entire "Brexit" experiment will be in free fall. No one will like it. Businesses will be fleeing the UK. It's already begun. But by golly, we must have Brexit, come hell or high water. London is giving stupidity a good name.

The free movement of goods and people will no longer be a benefit of citizenship. What a shame to lose all of the benefits that being part of the EU provided.

(9,958 posts)Theyre willing to sell their country to fascists just so they can refuse entrance to minorities and especially Muslimsjust like Trump supporters. The idea that their tiny country will have the same clout as being in the EU to establish favorable trade deals is just laughable. The UK doesnt import a lot of soybeans, but theyll have to get used to buying more because Trump will force them to buy the US soybean crops that used to go to China. And they can kiss their National Health system goodbye when it is sold to predatory US companies.
I have to wonder, as I do with Trump supporters, how all this hatred will end.

(1,120 posts)at least for most citizens. This cancer has already established a significant foothold in this country and continues to metastasize. Sorry, but I'd prepare for the worst (the Orange Anus being reelected and control of all branches of government). The Rule of Law is on life support and we're in extreme peril.
