300 Saudi military aviation students grounded in U.S. after base shooting
Source: Reuters
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Roughly 300 Saudi Arabian military aviation students have been grounded as part of a safety stand-down after a Saudi Air Force lieutenant shot and killed three people last week at a U.S. Navy base in Florida, U.S. officials told Reuters on Tuesday.
The FBI has said U.S. investigators believe Saudi Air Force Second Lieutenant Mohammed Saeed Alshamrani, 21, acted alone when he attacked a U.S. Navy base in Pensacola, Florida, on Friday, before he was fatally shot by a deputy sheriff.
The shootings have again raised questions about the U.S. military relationship with Saudi Arabia, which has come under heightened scrutiny in Congress over the war in Yemen and Saudi Arabias killing of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi last year.
Still, U.S. military leaders have sought to portray this as a localized issue which would not affect the overall U.S.-Saudi relationship.

(1,568 posts)Do you believe he would also be grounded due to him being Saudi? If so, how does that fit into the racial profiling? Also, do you know of any non-saudi military pilots from countries in the region who are also being grounded?
I suppose another question we could ask ourselves is if the shooter was from the UK or France or something, would there be a similar grounding. I'm not really sure, but I tend to think not. I would anticipate a response to that question would be 'does the UK or France have a history of exporting terrorism (or something similar)', and the citing of the line in the article that states changes in procedures will be applied to all students in the future. To which I would then expect a long discussion on what constitutes terrorism and exporting it. Forget this, I'm just going to go play solitaire.

(6,831 posts)Heavily-armed Iranian guerillas stormed and attacked the US Embassy in Teheran. They trapped US ambassador William Sullivan and about 100 members of his staff in the building, shelling it for THREE DAYS. At that time, I was stationed at NATTC Memphis, TN (Naval Aviation Tactical Training Command in Millington, TN). There were hundred of Iranians on base being trained in various capacities of aviation, including basic flight training. They were GONE in less than 24 hours, deported back to Iran.
There IS precedent for expelling foreign military trainees. ALL Saudi personnel should be IMMEDIATELY SENT BACK .
