Shootout in Jersey City leaves 6 dead, including one police officer

An hours-long shootout in Jersey City left six people dead, including one police officer, after two men fired at authorities Tuesday afternoon and began a gun battle that spanned several blocks and shut down a neighborhood, the citys police chief said.
The standoff began when the two men shot and killed a police officer who approached them at Bayview Cemetery in the citys Greenville neighborhood, said Jersey City Police Chief Michael Kelly. The gunmen fled to a convenience store, where they exchanged more fire with authorities and were killed. Three other people, believed to be bystanders, were also among the dead in the store, Kelly said.
The slain police officer was identified as Detective Joseph Seals, a 15-year veteran of the Jersey City force. Two other officers were also shot, one in the shoulder and the other in the body, Kelly said. They were treated and released from the hospital.

The violence also prompted lockdowns in all 43 of the citys public schools, Jersey City Board of Education President Sudhan Thomas told local media.

It seems like I read about gun deaths every single day anymore. When is enough enough?

(46,260 posts)Yes, decreasing in numbers of people killed and number of incidents.
It's the fact that now we actually have seen violent incidents as they happened, that is what makes it seem worse than it really is.
Combine that with the "If it bleeds it leads" viewpoint of the media, (gotta get the ratings, donchu know,) and you can see why people get fearful.
It sounds like the thugs that started this shooting were already felons, and as felons, them having guns would be a quick trip back to the slammer for them.

(45,255 posts)Criminals shooting people/police because of crime like drugs and gangs are decreasing.
But mass shootings of random strangers in schools and public places have gotten more common.

(6,853 posts)It can decrease statistically in the U.S., but its an impossibly high bar.
Is going from one hundred mass shootings to less-than-a-hundred statistically significant? Regardless, this is an issue that one mass shooting is too much.

(46,260 posts)Have you noticed though, how it's just about 10-1, someone plans a mass shooting but can't keep their big mouth shut?
They get busted.
It's about a 10-1 ratio, the wannabe mass-shooters get busted.
It's the quiet keep-to-themselves ones who make law enforcement nervous, not giving out any "red flags" until it's too late.
