Andrew Scheer stepping down as Conservative Party leader

Source: CBC

(Canada)

According to sources, Scheer recounted a lengthy late-night conversation he had with his oldest son last week, saying it left him feeling he didn't know his son well enough. Scheer said the job was taking a toll on him and his family.

...

Scheer, who was first elected to the House of Commons at age 25, will stay on until a new leader is chosen and will continue to represent his Regina-Qu'Appelle constituents "for the near future."

...

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau praised Scheer's family for making "significant sacrifices" and saluted Scheer's work in politics, first as an MP, then as House Speaker and then Conservative leader.

"I know the member opposite has shown tremendous strength and compassion as he has done that; through tragedies, difficulties, victories and more challenging moments, and I very much wish him all the very, very best in his next and exciting steps, whatever they may be," he said.

Scheer gained seats in the Oct 2019 election but the Liberals retained government reduced to a minority. Many in his party thought Trudeau was weak and the Conservatives should have formed government.

In my opinion he ran a nasty campaign (by Canadian standards), had no climate change plan, and was unable to repudiate his own statements from the 2000s against same-sex marriage and socially conservative issues.

From my limited understand of Canadian politics if the Cons give the leadership to Ford it would help the Liberals because Ford cost them seats.

Another Trump wanna be. He dropped out of the last leadership race of the Conservative party, I hope he doesn't re-enter. I'd frankly be worried if he ran, and won. He has that same infamous reputation here in Canada, as Trump did in the US before he was elected. A reputation as a self made billionaire (or at least multi-millionaire) who shoots off his mouth, not afraid to insult his "enemies" on the left. And more important, he is also a big reality TV star, well known, and thought of as a successful businessman and maverick non-politician.

6. If they give Ford the leadership, Trudeau should call an election in 2 years.

They will obliterate the Cons in all areas except Alberta and Saskatchewan.
