Trump administration allows pork slaughterhouses to have fewer USDA inspectors
Source: NBC
The Trump administration will allow pork plants to reduce the number of Department of Agriculture line inspectors assigned to them and run their slaughter lines without any speed limit under a new rule intended to modernize an antiquated inspection system. But the changes have alarmed consumer advocates who believe the rule will make food less safe and endanger workers. The new rule will let factory workers, rather than USDA inspectors, remove unsuitable carcasses and trim defects in plants that opt into the new inspection system. USDA inspectors will still examine the carcasses, but they will be stationed farther down the line, and off-line inspectors will be roaming the factory to conduct other kinds of safety checks. snip The USDA says that the rule is the first time in more than 50 years that pork inspections will be modernized, making food safer by focusing inspectors’ attention on more targeted safety checks rather than visual line inspections. The agency estimates that the change will reduce the total number of USDA inspectors at pork plants by 40 percent, saving about $8.7 million a year. snip “This rule puts industry profits ahead of public health,” said Thomas Gremillion, director of food policy for the Consumer Federation of America, an advocacy group. He called the rule “a recipe for food safety disaster.” Read more: https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/white-house/trump-administration-allows-pork-slaughterhouses-have-fewer-usda-inspectors-n1055451 Trump is a Russian asset who is trying to crash America from the inside. If people can't see that now I just give up.

2. I think the USDA inspectors will have something like 5 seconds per animal for inspection.
American farmers might take another hit when people skip buying pork from
these packing houses. |

6. while there are other real problems with fewer inspectors,
one thing the current factory farm technique of raising pork has done is virtually eliminate trichinosis (along with public education of handling/cooking safety)

8. This has largely been an artifact of inspections and enforcement at the production site.
So we gonna kiss it goodbye, too... especially with more imported ground and frozen pork products in the pipeline.

3. Is this one of those times that the market will self-regulate based on consumer preferences?
Is this one of those times that the market will self-regulate based on consumer preferences? Or will it self-regulate based on the fact that all of their consumers have DIED OFF because of trichinosis.
https://www.medscape.com/answers/1168167-102874/what-are-the-signs-and-symptoms-of-trichinosis https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trichinosis Nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, fatigue, fever, and abdominal discomfort are often the first symptoms of trichinellosis. Headaches, fevers, chills, cough, swelling of the face and eyes, aching joints and muscle pains, itchy skin, diarrhea, or constipation may follow the first symptoms. |

7. Also......
You can expect your bacon and pork products , especially ground pork, to have a strong liberal opposition taste to it, as does meats in Russia and Saudi meat dished. Bone saw markets will flourish.

Last edited Mon Dec 16, 2019, 01:36 PM - Edit history (1) after near death from a pork taco from a food truck.
He started violent vomiting within 20 minutes of eating the pork taco. His doctor said if his body did not reject the toxin by the hard vomiting he could very well have died. He did not have his usual healthy skin color look, he was drained from the vomiting episodes. His doctor has him on a baby food diet until his digestive system heals itself. |

19. Letting company employees do the inspections works so well (Re: Boeing 737Max)
Yes folks, let's modernize food inspections by having 40% fewer inspectors because that will save a whopping $8.7M/year. Wow! What a bunch of pig shit! Whatever happened to science-based decisions? Oh wait, this is a rule promulgated by Republicans, by the Trump appointed Sonny Perdue. That wonderful Sec. Ag. who has moved the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) from Washington, DC to Kansas City, MO causing 80+% of the staff to quit.
Considering that illness and recalls due to food-borne disease cost the economy billions of dollars each year, the economically and scientifically sound decision would be to increase the number of inspectors and develop an inspection system that uses the most modern molecular tools to detect the presence of pathogens and toxins that are a danger to the public. This just reinforces my experience that Trump and his appointees are bloody fucking morons. Fortunately, I am vegan and, therefore, keep kosher. |

21. He is just doing the work that his boss, Vlad, wants ..
... done. Destroy America from the inside. This was
a calculated move to cause maximum damage. It will hurt the pork producers, farmers who supply hog farmers with grain and feed, people and communities that are ag related, and pork packaging operations. Trump is not smart enough to understand all the ramifications but Putin and the FSB know the outcome. |
