The editor-in-chief of Christianity Today, which was founded by Billy Graham, says none of Trumps positives can balance his grossly immoral character.
By Carol Kuruvilla
The editor of a Christian magazine founded by the famous evangelist Billy Graham is calling for President Donald Trumps removal from office.
Mark Galli, editor-in-chief of Christianity Today, published an editorial on Thursday telling his readers that the impeachment hearings illuminated the presidents moral deficiencies for all to see.
The facts in this instance are unambiguous: The president of the United States attempted to use his political power to coerce a foreign leader to harass and discredit one of the presidents political opponents, Galli wrote. That is not only a violation of the Constitution; more importantly, it is profoundly immoral.
Trumps evangelical supporters justify their loyalty to the president by pointing to his Supreme Court nominees, defense of religious liberty, stewardship of the economy, and other achievements, Galli wrote. But none of the political wins Trump has achieved for evangelicals can justify the moral and political danger we face under a leader of such grossly immoral character.

NEW YORK A major evangelical Christian magazine founded by the late Rev. Billy Graham on Thursday published an editorial calling for President Trumps removal from office.
The editorial in Christianity Today coming one day after the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives made Trump the third president in American history to be impeached raised fresh questions about the durability of his support among the conservative evangelicals who have proved to be a critical component of his political base.
The magazines editorial, written by editor in chief Mark Galli, envisions a message to those evangelical Christians who have remained stalwart Trump backers in spite of his blackened moral record.
Remember who you are and whom you serve, Gallis editorial states. Consider how your justification of Mr. Trump influences your witness to your Lord and Savior. Consider what an unbelieving world will say if you continue to brush off Mr. Trumps immoral words and behavior in the cause of political expediency.

Whoa! No wonder he doesn't want his taxes revealed.
That's when he should have been thrown in a deep hole UNDER the slammer.

(9,963 posts)No wonder Trump thinks he is above the law. He has gotten away with breaking many of them his whole life. This information was easy to find during the 2016 election, but the major media never reported it. Nor do I remember seeing much, if anything, about the federal government going after him for refusing to rent to minorities. The media should have reported Trumps questionable dealings, but they gave him a pass and allowed his lies of amazing business success to stand. Meanwhile, they couldn't write enough stories about Hillarys innocuous emails. We all know this here, but I fear that the media will be in Trumps court again for 2020another hurdle to overcome.

Even now it would be good if the media gave us his history in specifics.

The fact is that the tiniest crack in the dam can eventually lead to a flood that can't be stopped.
We all know how easily-manipulated the 'religious right' is - and they are especially vulnerable to the words that come from 'their own'.
This could very well be the start of something big.

(62,444 posts)I don't agree that they are "easily-manipulated" either. It took a long and concerted effort to cement them into fold of right-wing conservatism, and they've experienced some shrinkage as a consequence of that.
Also, from Christianity Today:
There is only one trendline showing substantial growth in that picture - mostly, but not entirely, due to the relative collapse of mainline protestants, who aren't really "mainline" anymore and have not been for some time. Basically, the mainline protestants are dissolving between evangelical congregations and saying "screw this nonsense."
But even that is not enough to prop up the evangelicals. And that's the good news.

(27,813 posts)The minute their Christian leaders told them that Trump a lying, twice divorced, thrice married, self-declared pussy-grabber was a good Christian chosen by God to lead a nation, they swallowed it whole.
The same people who were horrified that Michelle Obama went sleeveless now claim that Melania is a perfect FLOTUS despite the fact that her nude photos are all over the internet.
Easily manipulated? You betcha!

(62,444 posts)That's the key phrase.
The opinion of one editor of CT doesn't cut it with them. He's not one of their "leaders" and he's already announced he's leaving the magazine. This is just his parting shot, and they know it.
Check out the replies on Twitter if you don't believe it.
They will follow their leaders. They will not be persuaded or manipulated by anything that doesn't come through the right channels, and this editorial is not that.
So, easy for their leaders to manipulate. Absolutely stuck on stupid when it comes to anyone else.
NanceGreggs
(27,813 posts)... that makes them easy to manipulate. The GOP targets 'the stupid' because they can be persuaded of literally anything - like consistently voting against their own best interests.
Intelligent people ask questions, seek out the facts. Stupid people just believe what they're told to believe.
I think too many people are awaiting a Trump action or statement that will drive the RW Christians away in one fell swoop. That's not going to happen - but little trickles here and there sometimes become a flood over time.

Christianity Todays call for President Trumps removal gave voice to his evangelical critics. But they remain a minority in a political movement that Mr. Trump has reshaped in his own mold.

The publication is small, reaching just a fraction of the evangelical movement.
But when Christianity Today called for President Trumps removal in a blistering editorial on Thursday, it met the full force and fury of the president and his most prominent allies in the Christian conservative world. If the response seemed disproportionate, it vividly reflected the nuanced reality of evangelical Christianity in the Trump era.
While white evangelicals are the cornerstone of Mr. Trumps political base and their leaders are among his most visible and influential spokesmen, a significant number of people who are followers of the faith remain deeply uncomfortable with the alliance with the president.
Mr. Trump, after being impeached this week, has repeatedly insisted that the Republican Party and its voters are unanimously lined up behind him. And on Friday he lashed out on two separate occasions at Christianity Today, erroneously calling it a far left magazine that was doing the Democratic Partys bidding.
I guess the magazine, Christianity Today, is looking for Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, or those of the socialist/communist bent, to guard their religion, Mr. Trump wrote on Twitter on Friday. How about Sleepy Joe? The fact is, no President has ever done what I have done for Evangelicals, or religion itself!
