McDonald's employees aid drive-thru customer who mouths 'Help me': police

Some McDonalds employees in Northern California are being credited with taking fast action on Christmas Eve on behalf of a customer who appeared to be in distress.
The woman entering a restaurant in Lodi asked an employee to call 911 and gave a license plate number for the vehicle she was riding in, according to the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office.
After she returned from a quick trip to the restroom, a man with whom she was apparently traveling demanded that they use the drive-thru window rather than wait in line inside the restaurant.
When their car got to the drive-thru window, the woman who was driving -- reportedly mouthed the words, Help me to the McDonalds drive-thru cashier. By then, San Joaquin County sheriff's deputies had already arrived from the 911 call and were able to arrest the man.
While in the drive-thru, a woman mouthed to an employee, "HELP ME." Just then, deputies arrived and spoke with employees inside the restaurant, they rushed them out the door telling them that the woman needing help was in the drive-thru line. (San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office)

(14,566 posts)They do tend to get stuff like this right, but when it comes to big national stories, particularly in the political realm, not so much.

They informed everyone else down the drive-thru line, and we held up actually two cars in front of that car. By holding those two cars up, it allowed us to then handle that situation, allow law enforcement to get here in a timely manner, said McDonald's marketing manager Regina Camera.
When deputies got to the McDonald's, they asked the woman and Valenzuela to get out of line and pull over. An initial investigation found Valenzuela had been violent with the woman in the past and he was forcing her to drive him to visit his family, the sheriff's office said.
Officials said Valenzuela was threatening the woman's life, and deputies found a firearm in the trunk of the car, which had been reported stolen in another state.

McDonald's locations across San Joaquin County train employees to protect human trafficking and domestic violence victims. The restaurants are considered safe places. Stickers are on the doors so victims know they can alert employees for help.
They look for signs to recognize if someone might be in a dangerous situation, and theyre trained to contact law enforcement immediately, Lopez said.
I'm impressed.
