Pelosi Announces She Will Send Impeachment Articles to Senate Next Week
Source: The Daily Beast
Three weeks after the House of Representatives voted to impeach President Donald Trump, Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced her intention to officially send articles of impeachment to the Senatea move that ends the Houses role in the process and tees up a Senate trial that could begin as early as next week.
Pelosi put an end to weeks of speculation about her strategy with a low-key letter to fellow House Democrats on Friday morning. The speaker wrote that she had asked Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler (D-NY) to be prepared to introduce a resolution next week that would transmit the articles to the Senate and appoint the handful of Democratic lawmakers who will act as prosecutors in the trial.
In an impeachment trial, every Senator takes an oath to do impartial justice according to the Constitution and laws, wrote Pelosi. Every senator now faces a choice: to be loyal to the president or the Constitution.
The release comes as a relief to some Democrats who had steadily lost patience with Pelosis gambit to hold the articles on the House side in the hopes of pressuring Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) to implement procedures for a Senate trial that Democrats would consider fairincluding an agreement to allow new witnesses and evidence to be presented.

(8,020 posts)Articles to Senate. She did not say that she would be sending them next week.
Here is the relevant language from the letter:
I have asked Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler to be prepared to bring to the Floor next week a resolution to appoint managers and transmit articles of impeachment to the Senate. I will be consulting with you at our Tuesday House Democratic Caucus meeting on how we proceed further.

Not surprised that this was timed for a Friday news dump.

(14,899 posts)if you give him 3 weeks to work with. Then Trump will spend a great deal of SOTU -- his biggest platform of the year -- dunking on Dems. Seems like an additional week or two would make a big difference.

(8,676 posts)We put all our eggs in a basket that GOP adheres to or gives and damn about an oath to the constitution. Like they constantly have proven. Now our only salvation is they will allow fair election, as they have proven. China, Iran, if your listening, with all the tech savvy you have, release EVERTHING on theses asshole and hack away at the elections. Time to get off the high road and play their game.
Listen to Huckabees remarks yesterday about congressional war powers and trumps powers. You think she has ever read the constitution? She speaks for the GOP. Our power, our rules, fuck the majority of the country. God sent him.

(391 posts)You "rush" through house, then slam the breaks. Might have been better to ask SC to rule on subpoenas.
This has a "well, we gave it a shot" flavor... Perhaps she didn't expect EVERY SINGLE REPUBLICAN would fall in line despite the evidence. Not the best look for Dems, but I may be missing an angle.

We need the largest possible turnout in D.C. in January. Come if you possibly can.
But if you can't, raise the call for Trump's removal in your community as often and as visibly as you can. It is imperative that we weaken his enablers, as described in L.A. Kauffmans To Weaken Trump, Target His Enablers in the Bye Bye Action Guide (PDF). What happens on the streets and in our neighborhoods could sway the outcome. History has shown us that when people rise up in our power and take collective action we can shift the course of history. Utilize our Action Toolkit that includes the Senatorial Oath of Office and Materials for your mobilizations. To keep track of the activities of the Senate, refer to U.S. Senate Calendar and Schedules.
