White House Deputy Counsel Patrick Philbin told senators during Wednesdays session of President Donald Trumps impeachment trial that it was a mistake to believe that any information about a political opponent that originates from a foreign country amounts to improper interference in a U.S. election.
I have no problem with what Philbin said, Burr told reporters.
Philbin, responding to a question about whether Trump believes foreign interference in an American election is illegal, told senators that as long as the information is credible, it is relevant to American voters.
I think that the idea that any information that happens to come from overseas is necessarily campaign interference is a mistake, he said. Information that is credible that potentially shows wrongdoing by someone who happens to be running for office, if its credible information, is relevant information for the voters to know about.
The argument outraged Democrats including Burrs counterpart on the Intelligence Committee, Vice Chairman Mark Warner (D-Va.), who said my head exploded when he heard the remark. Burr and Warner have worked closely on the issue of election interference in the aftermath of Russias efforts to meddle in the 2016 election perhaps the only bipartisan duo in Congress still working closely together on the issue..............

(4,066 posts)This just shows their rank hypocrisy. When it comes to the Steele Dossier, anything from a foreign power/person about a Republican is BAD. When it comes to any dirt about a Democrat -all good.
Disgusting assholes

(9,971 posts)Maybe Iran would like to provide some dirt. Or maybe North Korea or even South Korea since Trump screwed them over by demanding five times as much money to help support US troopsin other words, to turn them into a money-making mercenary force. Maybe France and Germany are tired enough of the Bloviator-in-Chief to share some tales of his misbehavior and stupid comments at world meetings. Or maybe China is ready to deal with a sane president and would give Democrats transcripts of secret calls to Putin and others on his nonsecure phone.
Republicans can hardly complain when their guy has done the same thing! But of course they wouldand no Democrat would ever stoop so low.
