Obama to urge UN to confront roots of Muslim rage

Source: AP-Excite

By BEN FELLER

NEW YORK (AP) - Campaign politics shadowing every word, President Barack Obama on Tuesday will challenge the world to confront the root causes of rage exploding across the Muslim world, calling it a defining choice "between the forces that would drive us apart and the hopes we hold in common."

Obama will step before the United Nations General Assembly and declare that the United States will not shrink from its role in troubled, transitioning nations despite the killing of four Americans in Libya, including U.S. ambassador Chris Stevens, and more than 50 people total in violence linked at least in part to an anti-Muslim film.

Obama will also to seek to show U.S. resolve in preventing Iran from developing a nuclear weapon, a menacing issue that has undermined White House relations with Israel's leadership.

In his final international address before the November election, Obama will stand up for democratic values on a stage afforded to presidents, not presidential challengers. He will use it to try to boost his political standing without ever mentioning Republican opponent Mitt Romney.

1. Obama warns Iran on nuclear bid, containment "no option"

(Reuters) - President Barack Obama will warn Iran on Tuesday that the United States will "do what we must" to prevent it acquiring a nuclear weapon, and appeal to world leaders for a united front against further attacks on U.S. diplomatic missions in Muslim countries.

Preparing to take the podium at the United Nations six weeks before the U.S. presidential election, Obama hopes to counter criticism of his foreign record by Republican rival Mitt Romney, who has accused him of mishandling the Arab Spring uprisings, damaging ties with Israel and not being tough enough on Iran.

Seeking to step up pressure on Iran, Obama will tell the U.N. General Assembly that there is still time for a diplomacy but that "time is not unlimited," according to advance excerpts of his speech, due to begin sometime around 1315 GMT.

His tough talk appears aimed at easing Israeli concerns about U.S. resolve to curb Tehran's nuclear drive, as he reasserts before the world body that he will never let Iran develop an atomic bomb and then simply contain the problem.

"never let Iran develop an atomic bomb and then simply contain the problem" - The US turns a blind eye to Israel doing so.

It might be all those drone attacks on their women, children, wedding parties, funerals etc.

It could make the citizens of ME countries a little bit cross. Just sayin'.

I wonder if Obama listens to himself, sometimes.

I meant this as a reply to the OP. Sorry.

There's a larger context to some stuff that doesn't just boil down to the US.

4. Oh brother. Hey Obama: The US "role in troubled, transitioning nations" ...

...is the "root of Muslim rage".

Here's how to confront those "causes":

Stop the drone wars. Remove all troops from Iraq, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia and pretty much every other country in the region. Recognize Palestine.

But of course he knows that and is just doing his job the way it is done.

I seem to think it is a small majority that are taken advantage of by political/religious figures, sent out to fight the boogieman by protesting at their embassy.

While I'm sure our foreign policy decisions are not appreciated by Muslims and Xtians alike in the ME, I think Obama will be singling out the small % that are willing to kill and burn down their own country.
