Coronavirus screening causes massive bottlenecks at O'Hare and other U.S. airports

Source: Washington Post

Airports around the country were thrown into chaos Saturday night as workers scrambled to roll out the Trump administration’s hastily arranged health screenings for travelers returning from Europe.

Scores of anxious passengers said they encountered jam-packed terminals, long lines and hours of delays as they waited to be questioned by health authorities at some of the busiest travel hubs in the United States.

The administration announced the “enhanced entry screenings” Friday as part of a suite of travel restrictions and other strategies aimed at slowing the spread of the coronavirus. Passengers on flights from more than two dozen countries in Europe are being routed through 13 U.S. airports, where workers check their medical histories, examine them for symptoms and instruct them to self-quarantine.

But shortly after taking effect, the measures designed to prevent new infections in the United States created the exact conditions that facilitate the spread of the highly contagious virus, with throngs of people standing shoulder-to-shoulder in bottlenecks that lasted late into the night.

1. Long lines are a sign of socialism

just like empty store shelves, canceled public events, empty venues, rationed health care, and people panicking at home because they don't trust their president.

2. I experienced this at DFW and I am concerned

I spent 6 hours in two different lines, very close to and sometimes touching complete strangers. I have almost no idea where any of them had been (I was returning from Mexico) or how well they had been taking precautions.

CBP was a complete disaster. They clearly had no idea what to do and offered very little information about what was going on. When they did show up (eventually), we got contradictory instructions from three different officials.

5. Its a Sign they are Making Decisions Flying By the Seat of their Pants

no thoughtful planning, strategy or Game Plan ie we are screwed

They probably caused more community spread than they avoided

6. LAX

Anybody been through Bradley at LAX in the past day or so?

Coming home from overseas later this week and wondering what customs and immigration looks like there?

8. Tahiti

We’re coming from Tahiti. Usually LAX immigration is loaded with Chinese 747s, so I’m thinking there’s a good chance it’s actually going to be quieter than usual.

10. Not the worst idea.

We’re considering it right now, but $$$. Most of the trip was on points. Only 3 cases here so far.
