Crowds of gawkers ignored New Yorks social-distance regulations and packed the west side of Manhattan on Monday to watch a US Navy hospital ship arrive to give badly needed coronavirus aid.
The throngs of people stood shoulder to shoulder and took photos of the USNS Comfort as it pulled into Pier 90 near West 50th Street at about 10:40 a.m., photos of the scene show.
Some waved American flags and others huddled against one another at the fence of the pier. Meanwhile, joggers out for a morning run brushed past the onlookers.
At least a dozen NYPD cops stood by and initially did not disperse the bone-headed bystanders as they gathered and snapped cellphone photos of the ship pulling into the pier.
After members of the City Hall press corps tweeted about the throngs of people, Mayor Bill de Blasios communications team directed the NYPD to get the crowds to disperse.................................

SS Comfort is needed so people with other horrific things can avoid getting C-19 at the already overwhelmed hospitals and help keep that valuable ship used all over, CLEAR of C-19!

(8,792 posts)all of the beds on the ship aren't already reserved for Republican Politiicians and Rich New York City Republican Donors......
They can't be expected to be mixed in with the Democrat Riff-Raff for their medial needs, now can they......
Would love to walk thru and also see if every single bed has it's own respirator.......

(45,380 posts)You can't avoid people no matter where you go. Some of these crowded tiny apartments are going to be like the shining with cabin fever.
While I don't want to be anywhere near people like this, I get why they would do it.

(35,282 posts)It's giving aid, and the aid is fairly fungible.
Never fear--it's unlikely that none of the patients sent to the ship will turn out to be infected, so there'll have to be moving people from the ship to NYC hospitals.

(4,950 posts)even on a pier of super big Naval ships, it sticks out. It is huge and white and different. It was even impressive to my son, who was in the Navy and stationed on a ship. It is not an image that one sees often, even if living by a harbor.
It also symbolizes hope for people that help is coming. It makes people feel that yes, the America they feel part of has their back and don't plan to leave them all for dead as opposed to the current mendacious RW talking points.
I understand why they came out.

(27,794 posts)It was unseemly, they acted as if they were sending off the QE2 on her inaugural cruise. I'm sure Trump would have broken a bottle of champagne over the prow if he could have.
Then they couldn't have signaled the route any more explicitly.
Is it any wonder that people lined up to see it? It was promoted as something so historic that the usual suspects would want to be on hand. Kind of the flash mob mentality the pervades certain groups of people.
