LOS ANGELES (AP) The mayor of Los Angeles urged 4 million residents to wear masks to combat the coronavirus when they walk out in public, even as state health officials shied away from requiring a coverup.
Homemade cloth masks, or even a tucked-in bandanna, will help reduce the spread of the COVID-19 virus in the nation's second-largest city and remind people to practice safe social distancing, Mayor Eric Garcetti said Wednesday as he donned a black cloth mask to make his point.
"I know this looks surreal, Garcetti said. Were going to have to get used to seeing each other like this ... This will be the look.
But he urged people against using medical-grade masks, such as N95 or surgical masks, which are in short supply and needed for health care workers and first responders. Garcetti also said people should only use masks when they are going out to shop for food or perform other essential tasks.

One hirsute galoot was just all over the place. He asked his wife, "What's the painkiller she has to take?" Answer: "Acetaminophen".
I scooted the other direction.

I'll be wearing them from here on out.
I hadn't been to a store in a week. When I went last week, I was just about the only one wearing gloves. Now everyone's wearing gloves and masks. One week made a huge difference.

If you have a sewing machine, here's a nifty one that takes less than 20 minutes to sew and uses twist ties as nose clips. : http://xobonmag.com/project/fabric-face-mask/

(51,550 posts)It will protect our front line workers from the public. But it will also protect the public. Even crude fabric masks reduce the viral load you beathe in and greatly reduce virus spread.
Mask wearing is how the Czech Republic was able to avoid the fates of its neighbors. Here's a fascinating video by two researchers who talked about the proven effectiveness of simple cloth masks, and how Czechs came to adopt cloth mask wearing (while other Europeans and Americans have not). It's 30 minutes long, the most import part starts at the 10 minute mark, but the whole thing is fascinating.
