St. Louis County issues travel advisory after viral photos of crowded Lake of the Ozarks bars

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. — A lack of social distancing over the holiday weekend prompted St. Louis County’s top leader to ask for a travel advisory — and urge anyone who ignored social distancing over the holiday weekend to self-quarantine for 14 days.

County Executive Sam Page asked the St. Louis County Department of Public Health to issue the advisory as workers head back to their jobs “after ignoring social distancing practices outlined by public health experts to protect against COVID-19,” the county executive said in a news release Monday afternoon.

Viral photos and videos from the Lake of the Ozarks showed people crowded in swim-up bars, outdoor restaurants and patios. Banners asked patrons to keep a safe social distance, but people were shoulder-to-shoulder and no masks could be seen.

Video (darn no link) of a pool party on Saturday at Clé Houston, a club in the city’s Midtown, shows a crowded outdoor gathering with no masks in sight.

Bars and clubs were allowed to reopen in Texas after COVID-19 lockdowns, but only at 25 percent capacity. It was not clear what percentage capacity Clé Houston had reached during the weekend pool parties. The club could not immediately be reached on Monday by NBC News.

Houston's fire chief, Samuel Pena, said on Twitter that his department has responded to about 300 complaints of violations of the governor’s reopening orders over Memorial Day weekend.

The city's mayor, Sylvester Turner, said Houston will close businesses that don’t follow state guidelines.

10. That's the problem with these "25%" or "50%" capacity rules...

In the first place, rules mean nothing when the establishment does nothing to enforce them. But, even then, the "capacity" is calculated as the number of people who could be crammed in shoulder-to-shoulder and still be able to evacuate safely in the case of a fire. Practically no one ever hits full capacity, except maybe for Irish bars on St. Patrick's Day. So "50% capacity" basically translates to "an ordinary busy day" pretty much everywhere.

little too late by now? Idiots. The Lake of the Ozarks and all of its businesses bear a huge responsibility to the rest of the state for putting the rest of us in harm's way w/ this idiotic behavior on the part of their pool goers/etc.

I think that this will backlash badly against these businesses in the center of MO. Or, at least I hope it does.

KCMO and STLMO had just gotten out of stay at home orders, and now this crap.

Heck of a lot of responsibility to the rest of the state of MO for a little money, eh? I feel like the 30 pieces of silver and Judas scenario applies somehow here...for a little money, put the rest of the state in harm's way...I hope you choke on the money you made over the memorial day weekend w/ your irresponsible actions.
