Fort Leavenworth soldier stops gunman on bridge by running over him with a car

Source: KMBZ News Staff

Leavenworth, KS - An active-duty soldier stationed at Fort Leavenworth stopped a gunman Wednesday morning on Centennial Bridge in Leavenworth by running over him with a car.

Leavenworth police chief Patrick Kitchens says a man was randomly firing at passing vehicles with a handgun and a semi-automatic rifle.

One person, another soldier stationed at Fort Leavenworth, was wounded.

When police arrived, they found the suspect trapped under a car.

"There was an active duty soldier assigned to Fort Leavenworth waiting in traffic behind the event who saw the event unfold and determined it was an active shooter," Kitchens said. "The soldier intervened by striking the shooter with his vehicle, causing him to be critically injured, ending the encounter with the active shooter and likely saving countless lives."

I'm glad the soldier was able to stop the guy without getting himself killed.

General term meant to include women, but used because of the NRA's "good guy" trope.

Random shooting on a public bridge seems like terrorism to me - having a handgun and a semi-auto rifle looks planned, and a situation where victims can't so easily flee. Though he obviously stood where he could be run over.

oh I guess there are other ways to stop a shooter. Either way, the NRA answer will be more guns.

Leavenworth, KS - Master Sergeant David Royer, an active-duty US Army soldier stationed at Fort Leavenworth, spoke to reporters Thursday morning about how he stopped a gunman on the Centennial Bridge the day before by running over the gunman with his truck.

Master Sgt. Royer was in a line of traffic and saw what was happening. He said adrenaline and training took over.

A man was firing a handgun and a rifle randomly on the bridge that links Leavenworth County, Kansas with Platte County, Missouri over the Missouri River, according to police.

Leavenworth Police Chief Patrick Kitchens said after the event there didn't appear to be any target, "the person was simply, randomly firing at vehicles as they passed by."

Royer says he hit the gas on his truck and "took out the threat as fast as possible."
