(102,225 posts)I loved remembering her and her longevity. She was a kind, loving person, a talented actress, and genuinely a fixture of Hollywood during its "golden age."
Much love to you, Oliva.

She was also fond of Champagne at lunch.

(10,014 posts)De Havilland by mail in the 70s. She was the only person on our dorm floor to get letters from France. I got to read them and De Havilland was always so kind to my roommate.

(59,583 posts)She and Kirk Douglas were really the last survivors of Hollywood's Golden Age. I honestly can't think of anyone from that generation of actors who's still around.

(7,513 posts)It includes a greater time span than I thought (up until 1959) because I considered the golden age to be the 30s and 40s and it includes mostly unknown or little known actors. Two who I would include from the early era and who were real stars still with us are Rhonda Fleming (96) and Eva Marie Saint (96). Two child actors from that area who are still alive are Robert Blake and Dean Stockwell, both of whom appeared in Hollywood classics.

(34,195 posts)Olivia de Havilland, an iconic actress of Hollywood's Golden Age and last surviving cast member of "Gone with the Wind," has died at age 104, her representatives said Sunday.
The Northern California-raised de Havilland had been living in Paris for decades, following her marriage to the late Pierre Galante, executive editor of famed French magazine Paris Match. Galante died in 1998.
De Havilland was nominated for five Oscars and took home best actress honors twice in 1947 for "To Each His Own" and in 1950 for "The Heiress." But she'll be best remembered for her work in "Gone With the Wind," picking up a 1940 best supporting actress nomination for playing Melanie "Mellie" Hamilton.
De Havilland and her sister Joan Fontaine, who went on to be an Oscar-winning actress as well, grew up in Saratoga, California, about 50 miles south of San Francisco, with their mother. The sisters never got along as kids and their rivalry continued through their adult lives and careers. Fontaine wrote in her memoir "No Bed of Roses" of her sister that she could not recall "one act of kindness from Olivia all through my childhood."

(12,863 posts)Can't remember how old I was -- maybe 6 or 7 years old -- when I saw her in Robin Hood and Captain Blood in the early 1960's.
She was the last survivor of Hollywood's "Golden" era. I will always treasure those movies, and their stars.

(66,316 posts)Fan of old films that I was. I thought she got overshadowed a little in GWTW by Vivian Leigh.
Then I bought "The Adventures Of Robin Hood" on DVD a number of years ago, and re-watched it for the first time since I was a kid.
My first thought seeing her again was "WOW!!!"
She was stunning. I mean, so beautiful, it just made you ache a little inside.
I became an ardent admirer at that moment.
May she rest in peace...

She was a brilliant actor. After Gone with the Wind, she got more involved in serious roles. Including her first Academy Award for 1946s To Each His Own, about a mother seeking to reclaim a son she gave up for adoption
