Cuomo: New York breaks one-day COVID-19 testing record
Source: AP
NEW YORK (AP) New York broke a COVID-19 testing record on Friday by conducting 82,737 tests, the highest number ever conducted in a single day in the state, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a tweet on Saturday.
Of those 82,737 tests, 753, or 0.91%, were positive. State data released Saturday also show there were 581 total hospitalizations on Friday and four deaths.
Cuomo urged residents to remain vigilant and to not attend crowded parties, noting Saturday marked five months since New Yorks first confirmed coronavirus case.
Since then, we have brought the infection rate way down through our collective action. Our future STILL depends on what we do today and everyday, he tweeted.

Remember this is one of the places where it would be most difficult to deal with and other places can likely do it without having to be as strict since they aren't as crowded.

(13,036 posts)the good Mayor. He's kept the residents informed w/ daily briefings and reliance on scientific data, not lies, and kept the city on stage 4 restrictions to slow down the infection rate. TX overall though is only getting worse due to the Repub governor's opening too soon.

(11,518 posts)The US obviously doesn't have that so we're suffering. Certain areas where local or state officials are diligent will do better, but the rest of us are being hampered by the albatross in the White House.

(711 posts)They've allowed science to dictate their course every step of the way. Strict lockdown, social distancing, tracing, phased reopening, this is what the entire medical community has advised since day one.
Everything has gotten so stupid in this country that it's amazing to see an administration that does not play politics during a global pandemic. It's that simple.
Our whole nation could have NY's numbers if we had had the clear-sighted, non-political leadership Gov Andrew Cuomo has provided for his great state.

(69 posts)By a large margin. For the last 22 days CA has averaged 124K tests a day.
CA is kicking butt testing.

(5,719 posts)So many were infected early and those who were asymptomatic never would have been tested. Now, if they're tested, it would come back as negative. The only way to know if these possible asymptomatic people had it and have recovered is through serology testing.

(128,850 posts)because studies have found that the antibodies start fading within a couple months. The "common cold" (both rhinovirus and coronavirus types) don't offer "herd immunity" either - using a more benign comparison.
I think what happened was that they were able to actually knock much of it "out of the environment" where it could easily be community-spread, plus you have many of the most vulnerable (outside of the unfortunate frontline workers), literally avoiding going out anywhere. I expect there may be many asymptomatic around but they are probably not getting tested and as long as they aren't acting egregiously, they would move past the timeframe for being infectious. The issue however, may be the ubiquitous "traveler" who leaves the state to go to a hotspot and then returns without self-quarantining (which I expect would be most people unfortunately).

(32,633 posts)That's the "Catch-22" in most states. If you aren't showing symptoms you can't take the test. But once you are showing symptoms, they already know you have it, so they won't waste a test kit on you. Just go home and wait it out. Call us if you're dying.
How does that help anybody, especially people who need to know if they've been exposed to the virus? People NEED TO KNOW! New York gets it: they're testing everybody who wants to be tested, including the ones with no symptoms.
