A group of voters backed by Republican legislators sued Gov. Tim Walz and other state and local officials Tuesday in federal court, aiming to block a face mask requirement at polling places.
Members of the Minnesota Voters Alliance and GOP lawmakers contend Walzs mask mandate, intended to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, conflicts with a longstanding state law making it a misdemeanor for someone to conceal their identity with a mask. The 1963 law grants exceptions, including masks that are part of medical treatment.
Thats a conflict and I dont know what to do on primary day, said Kim Crockett, one of the Minnesotans challenging the mask requirement.
She and other members of the Voters Alliance are seeking a temporary restraining order to block the rule that people must wear masks when they vote in-person during next Tuesdays primary election.

"I want to put the public at risk if they vote, and I'm going to spend time and money to do it in public and on the record."
They are truly desperate to suppress voting.

(10,302 posts)... and the voting is taking place in that building... who should be sued for this mandate? The people running the election may or may not have a mandate - but if First Church of the Nazarene (or wherever is holding the vote, it's often a church building or a school) has that mask requirement .. wouldn't everyone in the building have to comply?
I think this so-called Voters Alliance are suing the wrong people.

(32,754 posts)I suppose their rationale is repukes dont or wont wear masks.
JUST mho: They draw more attention to the mask issue, covid and the fact that THEIR voting populous is leery about dotard, theyve been told masks cause covid and in general not that interested in voting.

(11,605 posts)I normally oppose anything that makes it harder to vote. But most people have masks anyway, and this makes it safer for everyone. I'd be fine with a mask mandate if masks are provided for anyone who doesn't have one.
