Ban on abortion method overcomes filibuster, advances in Nebraska Legislature

Source: Omaha World Herald

By Martha Stoddard

LINCOLN — Nebraska lawmakers shut down a filibuster and advanced a bill Wednesday to ban a type of second-trimester abortion in the state.

Legislative Bill 814, introduced by State Sen. Suzanne Geist of Lincoln, drew 34 votes on a filibuster-ending cloture motion. The motion needed 33 to succeed. Senators then gave the bill 34-9 first-round approval.

The action came a week after Geist said she did not have votes for cloture. But a week of work and a promise of amending the bill got it over the first hurdle.

The vote also followed three hours of confusing debate over rarely used motions, much of which concerned a proposed "grand compromise" on a trio of tax and economic development issues.

Rename a medical procedure so that it becomes "gross" and have it banned. D&C is a common OB/GYN procedure for many purposes besides pregnancy termination (uterine polyps for example) and produces about 1/2 cup of bloody pulp. Banning it means poor GYN training which will kill women inevitably. The women haters will still use that to collect votes though while still claiming to be super moral .

The ban would apply when clamps, forceps or similar instruments are used to remove pieces of a viable fetus. The ban would not apply if suction is used to remove pieces of a fetus. It also would not apply if the fetus was dead before being removed.
