US records under 50,000 new cases for 1st time in 6 days
Source: ABC News
There were 46,395 new cases of COVID-19 identified in the United States on Sunday, bringing the nationwide total soaring past 5 million, according to a count kept by Johns Hopkins University.
It's the first time in six days that the nation has recorded under 50,000 new cases. An additional 516 coronavirus-related deaths were also reported.
Sunday's caseload is well below the record set on July 16, when more than 77,000 new cases were identified in a 24-hour reporting period.
Many states have seen a rise in infections in recent weeks, with some -- including Arizona, California and Florida -- reporting daily records. However, new data published last week in an internal memo from the Federal Emergency Management Agency suggests that the national surge in cases could be leveling off.

Good news. HOWEVER, I fear that people will once again think this is gone and get stupid again. Also, we're still far above the numbers from the first peak in April.
Also, I have to wonder how many new cases will ultimately come out of all the morons partying at Sturgis right now.

(128,748 posts)so I doubt that the numbers are actuals.
As an example, PA normally calculates what they have received from multiple sources, as of midnight (12 am EDT), then they will "report" that on their website by noon (12 pm EDT) that day. Yesterday I kept refreshing and refreshing all day and nothing.... I just checked this morning and they finally indicated they posted the data at "5:30 pm" (EDT). It's possible there was some kind of database maintenance, etc., going on but we'll really never know the "real time" numbers. Even here in Philly, they have stopped reporting on weekends and will report a combined 3-day total (for Friday's, Saturday's, and Sunday's numbers) on Mondays, and that's because there are certain labs that aren't transmitting those weekend results until they do a combined dump the following week.

That statistic doesn't mean much unless it indicates a consistent pattern. It is only one day and there are so many variables involved. Also as others have said, many labs don't post on the weekends.

This is on top of what some states are doing (not reporting at all on Sunday, and for some Saturday as well).
Wait for tomorrow's totals (Tuesday reporting of Monday results).

I'll wait and see the death numbers vs. last year's death numbers.

Given lack of federal management it feels impossible to believe that numbers could be going lower.

Until now it was possible to venture to the city for things you could not get here on Gilligan's Island. With the wave of new socially mobile students and associated social gatherings, I fear travel to Missoula will become fraught with many more opportunities for unintended consequences than has been the case.
We have been relatively safer here because we had a lockdown early on. However, it seems fools rush in.....

(7,876 posts)Given that several states are already playing with their numbers, and that testing is becoming such a hit or miss thing I would think this is more likely a temporary slack in the reporting rather than a true reduction or "leveling."
