Livestock ship carrying 42 crew, 5,800 cows sinks off Japan's coast

Source: LA Times

Japan’s coast guard was searching Thursday for a livestock ship carrying more than 40 crew members and nearly 6,000 head of cattle, rescuing at least one survivor who said the vessel sank during rough weather a day earlier off a southern Japanese island.

The Filipino crew member was rescued late Wednesday after Japanese navy surveillance aircraft spotted him wearing a life vest and waving while bobbing in the water.

The man, who is in good health, told rescuers that the ship capsized before sinking, coast guard regional spokesman Yuichiro Higashi said.

The survivor, a chief officer, said he quickly put on a life jacket and jumped into the sea, following an instruction in an onboard emergency announcement. He has not seen any other crew members since then, Higashi said.

Must have been pretty bad to capsize a ship capable of carrying 6000 head of cattle.

The Gulf Livestock 1 was reportedly transporting cattle from Napier, New Zealand to Tangshan, China. The vessel was built in 2002 and registered in Panama. It is owned by Dubai-based Gulf Navigation.

In late July, the Philippine Navy rendered assistance to the Gulf Livestock 1 after it lost propulsion off Balut Island in Southern Philippines. Repairs were eventually completed without incident.

Livestock. Not cows. Anything but calling the animals by their species name.

Transporting animals for slaughter is fraught with peril. Better to not do it in the first place, but that is just my standard rant and not related to the tragedy. May the families find peace in the tragic loss of their loved ones.

And those who profit from the suffering of silent animals always face obstacles in their violent path.

What's wrong with using "cattle", anyway? If anything, it seems more accurate then "cows".

cattle is what they are. cows are adult female cattle. species name is Taurus.

did the article say they were being transported for slaughter? seems it would be more efficient to transport meat after slaughter. maybe they were being transported for some other reason.

your last sentence is probably a non-sequitur

No cattle ship, no human victims.

My sympathies are entirely with the cattle, in this instance.

Drowning seems like such a horrible way to die. Not just for the crew, but also for the livestock.

Japan coastguard says second person found from capsized cattle ship has died

A second survivor from a cargo ship carrying 6,000 cattle that capsized off south-west Japan has died after being pulled from the water unconscious.

The Japanese coastguard said the man had been unresponsive when he was found about 75 miles (125km) north-northwest of Amami Oshima island and transferred to a hospital.

The dead crew member, who has not been named, was found in the water at 6:30am Japan time on Friday and rescued at 7:16am, 120km from Amani Oshima, the coastguard said.

A life jacket and cattle carcass were also collected from the same area, the coastguard said, adding that the search continued for a further 41 other crew members.

I wonder if most of the crew was in the giant cage apparatus with the cows when it capsized and couldn't get out in time. I hope they find more survivors.

As for the cows, will I be booted from Democratic Underground for suggesting that Devin Nunes hold a moment of silence for the cows on the House floor?
