Trump announces commission to further 'patriotic education'
Source: The Hill
President Trump on Thursday described Americas heritage and history as under assault from the left, decrying anti-racism teachings and "cancel culture" while announcing plans for a new commission to promote "patriotic education" in U.S. schools. In a speech delivered in somber tones at the National Archives Museum, Trump painted a dramatic and dark portrait of an effort by liberals to indoctrinate Americas children and repress American values, culture and faith.
We are here today to declare that we will never submit to tyranny. We will reclaim our history, and our country, for citizens of every race, color, religion and creed, he said.
Trump announced plans to sign a new executive order establishing a national commission to promote patriotic education in American schools, which he said would be called the 1776 Commission, a nod to his criticism of the 1619 Project throughout the speech. The commission will be tasked with celebrating the upcoming 250th anniversary of the countrys founding and with encouraging educators to teach our children about the miracle of American history.
In his remarks, Trump took particular aim at critical race theory, a methodology that argues racism and racial inequality are a result of systemic power structures. Trump called it a Marxist doctrine and said teaching it to children amounts to a form of child abuse in the truest sense of the word.

Was the goal here just to think of the most wild to do and get folks talking about it? Thank God his shenanigans are forgotten about 24 hours later. NOTHING is sticking with the overall populace Donnie. SAD! Ugh. Time for a shower after reading this news.

(9,313 posts)It's difficult to see how they plan to "whitewash" reality. Do they really think we should be "celebrating" that "miracle" period from 1776 to 1863 in which enslaved people were lawfully dehumanized and abused to build the nation into a financial power? How will they describe the following 100 years of judicially enforced segregation? How will they describe the devastating effects of the institutionalized racism that followed?
It boggles the mind.

There are tens of millions of Americans who would gladly go back to those days. Pretending otherwise is stupid.

(16,034 posts)That is not what we signed up for. That is not what our Constitution says. Being anti-racist is not Marxist. It's human decency and is what our country stands for. If that is no longer what we stand for, then we vote him out or it's time to get out.

(9,874 posts)Conservatives on school boards and state education boards have already ensured that the history taught in our schools has been thoroughly whitewashed. Ive shared this story here before, but a few years ago a high school history book described slaves as black immigrants who came here to work! You cant get anymore whitewashed than that. A parent looked at the book and contacted the media. The resulting outrage forced the publisher to make a correction in future printings, but hundreds of thousands of books were already in schools. It was thus up to teachers in a conservative state (Texas) to teach the truth. How many did?
This problem is compounded by the textbooks used by children who are home schooled. Parents are free to choose textbooks that are different from those used in the local schools. Many of them are published specifically for the home school market, and they go through no vetting for accuracy and bias. The science books are especially bad because they teach creationism and very little real science, just enough to pass any required state tests and a lot of Biblical stuff that is never on a test. School districts are supposed to monitor home schooling, but many are too busy to bother. Roughly 2.5 million students were home schooled before the pandemic, so it is not an insignificant number. Some parents home school to address the special needs of their children, but many home school because they are teaching content that would not be accepted in public schools.

(1,190 posts)I also suggest Eduardo Galeano's, "The Open Veins of Latin America": Following is a quote from him on "nobodies":
"Fleas dream of buying themselves a dog, and nobodies dream of escaping poverty: that one magical day, good luck will suddenly rain down on them -- will rain down in buckets. But good luck doesn't rain down, yesterday, today, tomorrow or ever. Good luck doesn't even fall in a fine drizzle, no matter how hard the nobodies summon it, even if their left hand is tickling, or if they begin a new day on their right foot, or start the new year with a change of brooms. The nobodies, nobody's children, owners of nothing. The nobodies, the no-ones, the nobodies, running like rabbits, dying through life, screwed every which way. Who are not, but could be. Who don't speak languages, but dialects. Who don't have religions, but superstitions. Who don't create art, but handcrafts. Who don't have culture, but folklore. Who are not human beings, but human resources. Who do not have faces, but arms. Who do not have names, but numbers. Who do not appear in the history of the world, but in the crime reports of the local paper. The nobodies, who are not worth the bullet that kills them."
Someone has to speak for the nobodies of history.

Almost done with the Mexican-American War section.
Throughout the text so far, I really like the way he uses actual quotes and documents from the people that actually participated in these events. Makes it very hard for anyone who's actually read it to make nonsensical claims about it...all the proof anyone needs is right there, in the text.

These are the two books I'm reading at the moment (sort of going back and forth):

At the bottom of this webpage is a good list of resources to choose from.
After hearing about this "commission" the next on my list is:

Historical revisionism is only good if it's his brand of bullshit.
I'm sure Trump would say he is blind to color differences. He only sees white. Everything else is of no consequence to him.
He won't "submit to tyranny", but he is okay if you're forced to.
