Ricin Is Said to Have Been Sent to White House
Source: New York Times
WASHINGTON An envelope addressed to the White House contained a substance that federal investigators identified as the lethal substance ricin, according to a law enforcement official briefed on the inquiry. It is unclear when the envelope was intercepted before it reached the White House mail room, but investigators believe that it was sent from Canada, according to the official.
Federal investigators are working to track down who sent it and determine whether other envelopes have been sent through the postal system. Ricin, which is part of the waste produced when castor oil is made, has no known antidote. The White House could not be immediately reached for comment.
In 2011, four Georgia men were arrested and later sentenced to prison for plotting to spread the toxin simultaneously in five American cities, targeting federal and state officials. That same year, American counterterrorism officials said they were increasingly tracking the possibility that Al Qaeda would use ricin in attacks against the United States.
Two years later, a Mississippi man sent letters containing ricin to President Barack Obama and a Republican senator in an attempt to frame a rival. The letters were intercepted at sorting facilities.

Lyrics
Lunatic Fringe
I know you're out there
You're in hiding
And you hold your meetings
I can hear you coming
And I know what you're after
We're wise to you this time
Let you kill the laughter
Uh huh
Uh huh
Uh huh
Lunatic fringe
In the twilight's last gleaming
This is open season
But you won't get too far
'Cause you gotta blame someone
For your own confusion
We're on guard this time
Against your final solution
Oh no
Uh huh
Uh huh
Uh huh
We can hear you comin'
No, you're not gonna win this time
(Not gonna win)
We can hear the footsteps
Way out along the walkway
(Out along the walkway)
Lunatic fringe
We all know you're out there
Can you feel the resistance
Can you feel the thunder, yeah

(CNN) A package containing the poison ricin and addressed to President Donald Trump was intercepted by law enforcement earlier this week, according to two law enforcement officials. Two tests were done to confirm the presence of ricin. All mail for the White House is sorted and screened at an offsite facility before reaching the White House. The FBI and Secret Service are investigating the matter.
Ricin is a highly toxic compound extracted from castor beans that has been used in terror plots. It can be used in powder, pellet, mist or acid form. If ingested, it causes nausea, vomiting and internal bleeding of the stomach and intestines, followed by failure of the liver, spleen and kidneys, and death by collapse of the circulatory system.
CNN has reached out to the White House and Secret Service for comment.
This story is breaking and will be updated.

(8,684 posts)I really dont care, do you. Mix a little into his Aderal lines. No fucks left. My inspiration is I am younger than McDonnell, Trump and Barr. And I plan to stay as healthy as possible, so I will be here to cheer and party, when these old assholes are called home. Not advocating any violence, just wanna be here to celebrate an end, naturally, to pure evil. Fuck those high roads, look what that got us. All the blubber around the necks of all three of them has to eventually choke em out.

(15,805 posts)How convenient. Now Trump will create a new venue to implicate Biden and Democrats in some conspiracy plot to assassinate him. Maybe Trump should ask his pal Putin how to stage his next performance art as a poison party.

(45 posts)1. An inside job, meaning that a far-right faction did this to pin it on the left, making Trump, et al, able to play the "victim" card.
2. I t also is not out of the realm of possibilities that the Russians helped with this and told the White House to expect this.

(43,062 posts)partly because these investigations of these types of incidents must be less than transparent to protect the targets.
But the timing here ... is it meant to distract? They've had 3.8 years and this happens now? I won't believe it coincidental until the evidence is known and shared publicly. Call me skeptical.

(128,514 posts)and how it badly impacted several post offices in NJ and I think FL. Ever since then, there have been all sorts of screening processes and procedures put in place, both at the post offices and in the mail rooms at all federal buildings (and particularly at the White House and in Congress) during the subsequent almost 20 years.
And you might also recall this guy and his mail bombs just 2 years ago (feels like forever ) -
https://www.cnn.com/politics/live-news/clintons-obama-suspicious-packages/index.html
All federally-targeted ones intercepted.
EndlessWire
(6,460 posts)I remember all that. But, Trump is twisted, and it would be nothing for him to say, despite all that you mention, that the mail has to be stopped while they check it all out. He has his fall guy in place to blame it all on. What are people gonna say? They can't say anything, because, you know, ricin...
I'm taking my ballot, completely filled out for blue candidates and Biden/Harris making certain it is properly signed, taking my driver's license, and packing for any kind of bullshit day, and I am going to hand carry it to the poll. It's the best I can do, a kind of special day where I get to stick it to the Orange Asshole. Then I wait.
BumRushDaShow
(128,514 posts)but the distaff side of that based on how he operates, is that he believes that he can come in and "save" things by "putting his people on it". And considering that the courts have already ruled against any attempts to halt disruption of the mail, then something like that will again get a rebuke.
In fact, any policy that even broaches that will pretty much destroy the GOP's election chances up and down the ballot at the state and local level, even if the deplorable "base" cheers every draconian measure that he attempts.

(15,220 posts)How many lies has a Trump told? After so many, you learn not to believe what he says (or directs others to say).
Im glad there are protocols in place to protect the people who would touch something like this. Surprised that Trump hadnt disbanded the hazmat team - but then again, this ultimately protects him.
