Thousands of Proud Boys plan to rally in Portland, setting up another clash in a combustible city

PORTLAND, Ore. — Thousands of members of the far-right Proud Boys plan to mass at a park here on Saturday afternoon, setting up another clash of liberal and conservative extremes in a city that has become the public front line for combustible — and deadly — political conflict.

The so-called Western chauvinist group espouses pro-Trump, police-friendly rhetoric, but its members have a reputation for sparking fights with the far left that devolve into mayhem. After four months of steady protests in this city, its choice to bring an armed, extremist crowd from all corners of the country to the Pacific Northwest again turns Portland into an ideological battlefield, a place where speech has crossed a dangerous line into violence.

President Trump has fanned the flames, saying that Portland and other Democratic cities condone lawlessness; he has ordered federal agents to take a stand against protesters and to make arrests, creating us-versus-them standoffs that appear bent on pitting the right against the left and characterizing it as good against evil.

Some worry another collision is unavoidable on Saturday. The rally comes at an already delicate time for the City of Roses, where on Wednesday a Breonna Taylor protest at police headquarters morphed into a rock-throwing riot that police broke up with impact weapons and pepper spray. Antifa and other far-left groups are also vowing massive counter-protests Saturday.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Oregon Gov. Kate Brown declared a state of emergency Friday as she announced that state troopers and sheriff's deputies would be sent to Portland through the weekend to help police, in the state’s largest city, monitor a weekend rally by the right-wing group Proud Boys and counter protests by liberal groups

Portland has been roiled by often violent protests for more than three months following the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

Brown told reporters she is exercising her gubernatorial authority to place Multnomah County Sheriff Mike Reese and Oregon State Police Superintendent Travis Hampton in charge of Portland's public safety on Saturday and Sunday. Brown said that Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler supports the plan.

“This is our entire community coming together to protect our community,” Brown said. “We want the highest level of coordination and the strongest leadership possible."

All the peaceful protesters would simply stay away so the “proud boys” would look foolish having no one to protest against.
I know it sounds counter intuitive but just take the air out of their white supremecist sails.

All violence could be laid at the feet of proud boys alone.

A few years ago, a white supremacist group in my area decided to have an event, a picnic of sorts, in front of the courthouse. All sorts of counter protesters made plans to be there. The sheriff encouraged people to stay home.

In the end, one white supremacist, a proud member of the beer belly brigade, and his toothless hag wife, showed up for the picnic. There were hundreds of counter protesters.

If everyone had stayed home but the two losers, it would have made a better statement. It would have saved the sheriff's department a lot of money in overtime pay, too.

Maybe that is the best way. Sort of like, "What if they gave a war and nobody came?"

Notice I only sort of agree with you. I have to give this more thought.

I am so saddened by the co-opting of our clearly peaceful-protesting-efforts, morphing into horrid scenes of violence and thuggery.

There needs to be a better way.

I’m not a wedding planner or organizer by nature. I am a cheerleader to the core.

Although it hasn’t happened yet, I am hoping I have one good “March on Washington DC” in me before I am a Septuagenarian. I am 66 now.

2:15 p.m., Proud Boys, Delta Park: Portland police announce they are investigating an assault on a person of color who was live-streaming video at the Proud Boys rally. They ask for eyewitnesses to help them solve the kicking and pushing attack on the individual, which was caught on video.





The attendance for the Portland rally was predicted to be in the thousands by the Proud Boys.
