Mac Davis dies at 78: Singer, songwriter, actor wrote 'In The Ghetto,' starred in films

Source: The Tennessean

Mac Davis — a singer, songwriter and actor who wrote "In The Ghetto" and other classic songs for Elvis Presley before becoming a multitalented star in his own right — died Tuesday at age 78.

The announcement was made by the Country Music Association, following word from Davis' manager that he had become "critically ill" after undergoing heart surgery in Nashville.

He was such a classic with such a unique voice that brought the needed gravitas to his songs.

I hope he passed peacefully. After reports of his cardiac surgery gone bad went public I expected he might, but this is sad news for sure.

I had his album along with Helen Reddy's.

I guess losing these people of my generation makes me more aware of my own mortality. In my mind, I'm still in my 20's.

RIP, Mac. Thank you for your music.

He was the opening act for Jack Benny (with whom I had a nice chat when I bumped into him in the halls*). He told the story of Bobby Goldsboro wanting to change the name of Watching Scotty Grow.

*(Autocorrect wanted to change "halls" to "balls." That would have been a very different story)
