Japan Leader Says Biden Agreed Treaty Covers China-Claimed Isles

(Bloomberg) -- U.S. President-elect Joe Biden assured Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga that the security treaty between the two countries covers East China Sea islands also claimed by China.

Suga told reporters the commitment came in a phone call between the two leaders on Thursday morning in Japan, during which they agreed to meet as soon as possible and to work together on a range of issues, including the coronavirus.

Japan seeks assurances on the scope of the security treaty every time the U.S. picks a new leader. Article Five of the treaty obliges both parties to “act to meet the common danger” in the event of an armed attack on either party in territory administered by Japan. The U.S. recognizes the disputed islands as administered by Japan, rather than saying they are part of the country.

Chinese and Japanese government vessels constantly chase one another around the islands, which are known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China.

2. They're not islands they're rocks

1952- Treaty of San Francisco was signed, without the mention of Senkaku Island. big mistake.

When the treaty was signed there really wasn't an explicit recognition of these "rocks" by the US or China as Japanese territory. Japan's position on this is similar to their claim to Dokdo Island in the East Sea or Sea of Japan. The only difference is that S.Korean controls Dokdo. Japan controls Senkaku.

...at the Permanent Court of Arbitration whose panel was selected by Japan, they are rocks.

5. And yet according to the dictionary definition they are islands:

"Island, any area of land smaller than a continent and entirely surrounded by water. Islands may occur in oceans, seas, lakes, or rivers. A group of islands is called an archipelago."

They have vegetation and are big enough to built houses on, I'd call that an island, the panel notwithstanding.

“The Tribunal will use the term ‘rocks’ for high-tide features that “cannot sustain human habitation or economic life of their own” and which therefore, pursuant to Article 121(3), are disqualified from generating an exclusive economic zone or continental shelf. For high-tide features which are not rocks, and which pursuant to Article 121(2) enjoy the same entitlements as other land territory under the Convention, the Tribunal will use the term ‘fully entitled islands’.”
