Romney's abortion comments leave campaign scrambling to unify ticket

Source: Guardian UK

Mitt Romney and his running mate Paul Ryan were scrambling on Wednesday to present a coherent position on abortion amid accusations from Democrats that the Republican presidential candidate had hidden his true beliefs in an attempt to appeal to moderate voters.

In the wake of a Romney interview with the Des Moines Register newspaper in which he said his agenda included no legislation to restrict abortion, his campaign team launched a damage limitation exercise to assure conservative voters that he remained staunchly pro-life.

Within hours of the comments being published on Tuesday, Romney's campaign insisted that he was against abortion, telling the conservative National Review Online that Romney "would, of course, support legislation aimed at providing greater protections for life.

"Mitt Romney is proudly pro-life, and he will be a pro-life president," said his spokeswoman Andrea Saul in a statement.

Amazing. Ryan is smacking down Romney on his efforts to recant on his prior anti-abortion comments.

When you are planning to steal the election (remember those Bain voting machines are already in place), find a way to make the election itself seem neck-and-neck. That way when the votes are "tweaked", everyone just says, "Well, it was too close to call. Could have gone either way."

In preparation for the literal campaign, have the candidate practice his or her lying without twitching.

Do the standard purging of the registered voters lists. Tamper with the absentee balloting when and if necessary.

Reduce the number of polling places and voting hours in counties favoring your opponent. Have a line of people present to harass or perhaps even challenge voters on election day. Also have a support team of attorneys and judges cued in. Promise them if you win a seat on the Supreme Court when and if necessary.

Drive down the ability of registered voters to actually vote, particularly those in the base of your opponent. I don't think I need to elaborate here. You have already picked up on the maneuvers.

Prepare ahead of time. Get as may Secretaries of State as you can installed in key states belonging to your party. After all, they do play a truly important role at the critical hour, especially in key swing states. If your brother or another family member is available to run in any of those states, lend that person all the support he or she needs to acquire that office. Family members never write tell-all books afterward ....

Have your candidate start acting as if he is the winner. (Remember when Bush* did that in the 2000 campaign, especially towards the end?) Romney has changed his posture. He is acting in a very pompous manner, as if he already is the President. That is to get us used to the idea -- our current President is out, Romney is in. Just go ahead and start thinking of him as the President because he soon will be. And there is nothing you can do about it.

Start announcing potential cabinet members. Get your transition team ready. And do these things noisily and publicly.

Quietly assemble pollsters to put out deceptive polling numbers, and get your "technical team" quietly at work.

Have your Recount Primer on hand if needed. Can't fumble that.

Do whatever it takes to win, because achieving all that power and profit is worth the sacrifice one might have to make in his or her own sense of ethics. Winning at all costs then becomes your sense of ethics. This year, the Republican motto is simply "Do what it takes -- DWIT", which is just another way of expressing their 2000 motto, win at all costs. See how that all runs in a circle, just with different code words?

Prepare your acceptance speech. Everything is ready now except for deciding who in your small circle of the inner team will get ambassadorships and to where when you win.

I've been trying NOT to feel the american people would stand by and let a THIRD election in 12 years be stolen yet all you say is more than possible, even probable? Money trumps all in this alleged democracy, very small d. Land of the free, home of the brave? Not hardly anymore. Money is the god of the power brokers now. Race, gender, sexual orientation all are used to create a class driven society with the mittytwit and queen anne people creating and guiding the chaos amongst the 'lower classes'. They have a vested interest in breeding an low information, racist, homophobic religious class that hates all except the new christians, the mormons. I hear you loud and clear. Let's just hope our justice department is sharper than GORE's or KERRY's was.

some even outside of DU? It really bothers me when everything seems to be in place that this is not a major topic of discussion. I think that is due to the fact so much of our news is broadcast overseas now and any legitimate broadcaster talking openly on this subject would be quickly condemned. After all, we go around the world spreading democracy but our own internal elections are terribly suspect in legitimacy.

I don't see the U.S. Government intervening if there are suspicious circumstances which adversely impact the election. If anything, citizens will have to do something, and the number one thing would be to prove beyond a doubt a tipping point state or a combination of states allowed their own state constitution to be violated in the process or perhaps allowed Federal election fraud. And that would have to be done before the new President is sworn into office. Proving it the next day does not matter. The President after taking the oath can only be removed by conditions spelled out in the Constitution, for being guilty of high crimes or misdemeanors. That means literally while he was in the oval office.

I do think Obama has a lead in the race that will see him through election day, but I do have a sinking feeling about other aspects lurking in the background. I sincerely hope I am wrong to be thinking this....

Obama was 18 points up in the polls with women last week. I don't care what anyone says about a woman's prerogative to change her mind, we're not that fickle! And Romney's bullying debate performance turned most of us off, not on, according to post-debate analysis! Plus, if women had swung that wildly toward Romney, wouldn't his poll numbers be a lot higher? I'm getting mighty confused and headachy.

This has just gotten comical. I just do not understand the part of the country who still sees him as a viable presidential candidate. I could see the wealthy and the hard core base still supporting him but the numbers he is getting indicate that there are many reasonable people who are still behind him as well. It would be funny if it were not so sad and downright scary.

Obviously, I didn't like or agree with Bush at all, but at least he was consistant on this issue, from what I remember.
